Honestly, Kalshi sports contracts have totally changed how I predict and participate in sporting events. This prediction market lets you trade binary event contracts tied to real world outcomes. This lets you back up predictions with cash.

It has been a total game-changer. If you haven’t tried Kalshi sports prediction markets before, don’t worry, I’ll happily show you the ropes. On this page, I’ll discuss how the pricing for event contracts works, its fee structure, and how to get started right away. There’s so much to unpack, so sit tight and read on to learn more.

3 key takeaways from this guide on sports predictions trading via Kalshi

      • Kalshi sports contracts are binary Yes/No positions tied to a specific sports outcome.
      • If your prediction is correct, the corresponding contract settles at $1. If wrong, it settles at $0.
      • You can exit positions before a sports prediction market settles to either lock in profit or minimize a loss.

What is a Kalshi sports contract?

It’s a binary (Yes or No) derivative priced between $0.01 and $0.99. The price you see for each Yes or No contract reflects the market’s estimate of an outcome happening. For example, if a contract costs $0.55, it means traders believe there’s a 55% chance that the outcome happens during or at the end of a sports event.

So, if you decide to buy that contract at $0.55, and you’re correct (your prediction tallies with the outcome), it settles at $1. That’s $0.45 in profit per share you purchased. If it settles at $0, you lose the $0.55 per share you put in.

That’s exactly the setup behind sports event contracts on Kalshi. Even if you’re a fan of soccer, the NFL (National Football League), hockey, college sports, golf, tennis, or basketball, the structure of their contracts stays the same. As I explored how Kalshi works, I was very happy to know that I can sell my purchased event contracts even before a match settles. As such, I can lock in a profit or cut my losses and move on to the next trade. It’s a very nice feature, I must admit.

      How Kalshi sports contracts work

Kalshi covers over 17 different sports. Each comes with a question and a Yes or No answer. Here’s an example of what I mean:

Will Argentina win the 2026 World Cup?

      • Yes: $0.21
      • No: $0.79

Simple question, right? Now, from the sports prediction market above, you’ll notice that the Yes contract for Argentina to win the 2026 World Cup currently costs $0.21. This price provides you a chance to lock in a position early if you believe the Argentine team will lift the 2026 World Cup trophy.

So, let’s say you purchase 10,000 Yes contracts based on that belief, for a total of $2,100. This cost excludes the Kalshi trading fees, which are charged when you accept the current price and execute immediately.

Now, if at the end of the WC tournament Lionel Messi and his teammates lift the trophy, each of your Yes contracts settles for $1. That totals $10,000, so you now have a profit of $7,900 ($10,000 - $2,100).

How prediction market prices can change

As Argentina scales through the knockout rounds, expect the Yes contract price to increase. In fact, as more teams get eliminated, nations that make it through the qualifying rounds will see a significant rise in their contract prices.

So, let’s say the World Cup is now in the semi-final round, and the Yes contract now trades at around $0.55. That means you have an unrealized profit of $0.34 per share (about $5,500). If during the match, Argentina is 1 goal down at 80 minutes, you would notice that the Yes price will drop. For instance, you may see it at $0.35.

That drastic drop indicates a shift in traders’ views that Argentina may no longer win the match and possibly lift the WC trophy. At this point, you can sell early to lock in a portion of your potential Kalshi payouts and avoid losing the entire contract. If you don’t and Argentina gets knocked out, each of the Yes contracts you purchased settles at $0. You go home with nothing.

      Sports covered at Kalshi

As I’ve mentioned earlier, this structure is available across all major sports events. If you’re an American football fan, trading NFL matches on Kalshi is very interesting. From my review, I found markets not just on outright winners, but division winner markets, conference championship contracts, Super Bowl fixtures, MVP markets, and player prop contracts.

The NBA (National Basketball Association) is another sport that is well represented on this platform. Kalshi basketball contract markets span regular-season win totals, playoff qualifications, finals winner futures, MVP races, and player props. And when the games go live, the contract prices shift rapidly.

I should note that liquidity may vary depending on the sports prediction markets you’re trading. This is especially so in less popular sports events, where the liquidity pool is shallow. As such, you have a higher risk of being stuck holding a contract or forced to sell at an unfavorable price just to get out.

Is Kalshi providing sports predictions trading in the US?

Absolutely. I won’t be here talking about how it works if the regulators don’t even allow this prediction market platform. Kalshi operates as a Designated Contract Market (DCM) licensed by the CFTC (Commodity Futures Trading Commission), the same federal body overseeing US derivatives markets.

You can check Kalshi’s T&Cs to make sure the platform is available in your state. Check the other eligibility requirements as well – you’ll need to be at least 18 years old, and you’ll need to complete KYC verification before you can start trading on Kalshi predictions markets.

Note that trading predictions carries risk. You’ll lose all the money you put in if your prediction is wrong when the event contract settles. Never trade predictions with money you can’t afford to lose.

FAQs on Kalshi sports prediction contracts

How are Kalshi sports contract prices determined?

The market itself sets them. A contract at $0.70 reflects a collective view that there’s roughly a 70% chance of that outcome occurring. Prices update continuously as new trades come in and sentiments shift.

Can you exit a Kalshi sports contract before the event ends?

Yes, you can sell your contract at any point before the market closes. If the price has moved in your favor since you entered, you can lock in a profit without waiting for the final result. On the other hand, you can use it to minimize a loss when your prediction doesn’t go as expected.

Is Kalshi a legitimate platform for sports prediction markets?

Yes, it is. The CFTC regulates Kalshi as a Designated Contract Market. It’s available in most US states.

What sports can you trade contracts on at Kalshi?

Kalshi currently covers 17+ sports, including American football, basketball, baseball, hockey, college sports, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), golf, tennis, and soccer.
