Bochum did not look good in their two competitive matches so far, losing to 2nd division Regensburg (and being eliminated) in the Cup, and after that they did put up a fight against RB Leipzig but ended up losing by 1-0 on the road. Now up for their first home match of the season against a Gladbach team that looked Leverkusen in the eye last week, but fell victims to Leverkusen's "black magic", as they scored another late goal to beat Gladbach by 3-2.
Gladbach made some good additions to their roster in the off-season and are looking to wash off one of their worst seasons in recent memory. They have a ton of quality up front but quite leaky at the back. Still, they can certainly outscore a Bochum side that has lost some of the steam from last season.
Gladbach won just 2 of their 17 away matches last season (W2 D7 L8), and one of the two teams they beat was Bochum, and rather easily, as they blasted them by 3-1 in this venue, scoring all 3 goals within the first half. One of Gladbach's additions over the summer was actually Bochum's top scorer last season, Kevin Stoger (7 goals and 9 assists), so he knows the weaknesses of his former team, and while we're on the subject, Bochum also lost their 2nd most productive scorer (Asano with 6 goals and 1 assist), and did very little to replace them.
In fact, Bochum currently have a squad value of 57 million euros, while Gladbach have a squad value of 159 million euros. Squad values alone are not something we should base our decisions on, but it's an indicator. In any case, Gladbach definitely have what it takes to at least avoid the loss on Saturday.
