Analysis

White Sox (7:10PM ET NBCSCH, MLB TV) – We sweep on Thursday with Twins and Cubs both getting it done and add another winner with NC Dinos on Friday morning. That’s four baseball winners in a row and I’ll look to make it five straight when two of the worst teams in baseball meet at the Midway when the Chicago White Sox kick off a three-game set with the Colorado Rockies at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago, Illinois.

I’ve done my best MLB work this season targeting recent MILB call ups that I feel I have gauged better than the oddsmakers.  Yesterday we cashed in David Festa’s MLB debut with the Twins destroying the Diamondbacks and had an easy BEST BET winner on the First Pitch show with Angels +1.5 winning outright in Davis Daniel’s first career start. Tonight it’s Drew Thrope’s time to shine, he was called up from AA directly to MLB but has settled in nicely and I think he finds continued success against the lowly Rockies here.  Thorpe is a 2nd rounder from the 2022 draft, the White Sox are loaded with prospects at AA right now and he’s the first of the bunch to matriculate to MLB.  All things considered Thorpe’s call up has been a success, on short notice he was solid in Seattle giving up one earned run in five innings and last time out he fired 6 scoreless in his first career win over the Tigers.  I’m willing to throw out the start against Arizona as he ran into the Diamondbacks when they were the hottest they have been all season and that one start is inflating his numbers at present.  I suppose walks are a concern (9 in 9.1 innings in his last two starts) but collectively Colorado has some of the worst plate discipline in the league.  The Rockies are also horrific on the road, it’s well known the Rockies are a bad baseball team but the little success they have had this season has come at Coors Field. On the road the Rockies are 11-29 and have far worse offensive splits so I’ll put my money on Thorpe being good enough to get the ball to the White Sox top bullpen arms to see out a win here.

If I’m going to fire a 5% play, I always want more than one path to victory and I think we have a clear one with Dakota Hudson on the mound for the visitors here. I cashed a 4% BEST BET playing against Hudson last week against the Nationals in a game where he lasted just three innings and gave up 8 runs on 11 hits with no strikeouts.  The loss dropped Hudson to 2-10 on the season, in just about any other organization he’s probably designated for assignment but the reality for the Rockies right now is they have very little MLB ready talent in their organization.  There’s no pitching at all at AAA Albuquerque and the Rockies have an outstanding AA team (Hartford Yard Goats!) who are playing great ball so I think the idea is to keep that crew together and let the big league club take a beating as they rebuild with homegrown talent.  Hudson has a 7.45 ERA in June, the Rockies have now lost all four of his starts, have been outscored 36-14 in those games to contribute to a team ERA of 6.75 that’s also the worst in MLB this month.  The Rockies 6-18 June record is worse than the White Sox so, again, I think the South Siders being a slight favorite is justified here.

For Chicago the pitching actually hasn’t been terrible, Garrett Crochet has been one of the top starters in baseball while Erick Fedde is in the midst of a career year.  The White Sox haven’t been able to translate their solid pitching but the reality is their games have been more competitive and they have also just got done with a very tough stretch of schedule.  The White Sox just ended a stretch where they played at Brewers, at Cubs, Red Sox, at Mariners, at Diamondbacks, Astros, at Tigers and Dodgers.  The White Sox played a stand alone make up game yesterday with the Braves where the White Sox finally got a result in a 1-0 win.  I’m not saying it’s time to “buy” the White Sox but I won’t be surprised if they manage to play .400 ball on a stretch that includes the Rockies, at Guardians, at Marlins, Twins and Pirates.  The best matchup by far is the three home games against hapless Colorado this weekend so I’ll go ahead and jump in here.  Play on White Sox -114 for 5% (or 5 units)
