Marquette is one of eight teams at KenPom that ranks in the top-20 in both offensive (8th) and defensive (19th) efficiency. A reliable backcourt is one of the biggest keys to success in March, and if they stay healthy, the Eagles' duo of Kam Jones and Tyler Kolek will be one of the best in the country. Kolek was considered questionable to play at Illinois last Tuesday and still scored 24 points on 10-of-18 shooting with six rebounds and four assists. Marquette (3-0) won that game 71-64 as a two-point 'dog and that’s clearly a more impressive result than anything UCLA has produced in its own 3-0 start. The Bruins had 14 turnovers in a 78-58 win over Long Island last time out and this will be the Bruins' first time leaving campus. Not only do they lack the experience Marquette has (Mick Cronin lost four of his five starters from last season), but the Bruins also cannot match offensive firepower in this one. They’ll likely try to slow the tempo and rely on defense, but Marquette can score at will and is likely to improve upon its 62-percent free throw shooting as well. UCLA has really struggled from beyond the arc so far (24-percent) while averaging just two made three-pointers per game. We don’t see how they keep up with the Eagles here with that kind of shooting. UCLA earned a 67-56 road win in Milwaukee in 2021, holding the duo of Kolek and Jones to three points combined (Kolek was scoreless in 36 minutes). That was when UCLA has upperclassmen studs like Johnny Juzang, Tyger Campbell and Jaime Jaquez when Kolek and Jones were both freshmen. Now the roles are reversed and Marquette has the experience over the much-younger Bruins.
