College basketball bettors and analysts are paying close attention to the Nate Oats coaching tree. Alabama's head coach has built his coaching philosophy on Rim-and-3 concepts: Almost every shot either needs to be taken at the rim, or a three-pointer. Oats deserves a ton of credit for what he accomplished at Buffalo, but he took over a 23-10 program that was in the NCAA Tournament the year prior under Bobby Hurley. He had plenty of pieces to work with, and he parlayed that into four strong years with the Bulls followed by four more years at Alabama. He's never had a bare cupboard to work with. His two former assistants are learning about the struggles of the Rim-and-3 when you don't have players that can make a three-pointer. Charlie Henry at Georgia Southern and Antoine Pettway at Kennesaw State are in their first years at those respective programs after working under Oats at Alabama. Kennesaw State is playing at the fastest pace in the country, but the Owls are No. 341 in effective field goal shooting and No. 327 in three-point shooting. Georgia Southern is off to an 0-4 start this season, ranking outside KenPom's top-275 in offensive efficiency, defensive efficiency, effective field goal shooting, effective field goal defense, turnover rate, assist rate and two-point shooting. The Eagles have lost three of their first four games by double digits. Georgia Southern was involved in a lightning-fast contest yesterday with 81 possessions. That's not an ideal way to start a tournament with three games in three days.
