3% Take San Jose State (#430)
This is a tale of two teams headed in opposite directions down the stretch. 2023 has been a truly miserable season for the once proud San Diego State program. Brady Hoke took over a perennial Mountain West contender, rode Rocky Long’s talent to a 12-2 record in 2021, then promptly rode the program into the ground. Hoke had similar results during his ill-fated tenure at Michigan before Jim Harbaugh righted the ship.
Hoke announced his pending retirement after the Aztecs third consecutive defeat and seventh loss in their last eight games, falling last week at Colorado State in a ‘not as close as the final score would indicate’ 22-19 defeat; another game where this anemic offense was held out of the end zone until the fourth quarter. But Hoke is going to coach out the string and his team didn’t seem to care very much about his announcement from the quotes I read; a last place, miserable, broken football team without much fight left in the tank.
San Jose State is the opposite of that; surging down the stretch and improving by the week under Brent Brennan, a coach who gets the love from his players that Hoke never has. The Spartans are 4-0 SU and ATS in their last four games, including an impressive blowout over previously surging Fresno last week. If they win out, they’re live to play in the Mountain West Championship Game. San Jose has been looking up in the standings and getting pounded by the Aztecs in most recent meetings, just 1-9 SU in their last ten games vs San Diego State. This year, they’re the vastly superior squad, poised for some payback. Lay it or don’t play it! Take San Jose State.
