Ecuador vs Uruguay
World Cup Qualifiers, Tuesday, 5pm ET
Ecuador met a marginal 1-goal loss to Argentina in the opener but they will now return home for this next assignment, where they will play host to Uruguay who started off with a confident 3-1 win against Chile.
The match will be played in Quito, Ecuador, that has an elevation of 9,350 feet, something that makes the conditions up there really rough for athletes (low oxygen etc). Much like matches in Bolivia, the altitude is beneficiary to the home team that is accustomed to it, and it's always really hard for visiting teams to play good in such conditions.
Ecuador blasted Uruguay by 4-2 the last time they hosted them in the World Cup Qualifiers in 2020 (with pretty similar rosters), already up by 4-0 before conceding two late penalty kicks. They have been quite solid when hosting Uruguay over the years (W7 D3 L5) with a +4 goal difference.
Ecuador have started these qualifiers with a -3 point penalty, and they lost their first match so they are under a lot of pressure to win this one, otherwise they can be left chasing the top-7 spots really early in this stage. Uruguay under a new look and playing with a lot of pressure and really good offensively. They won't sit back and take the loss just like that.
