Mike Leach was widely regarded as the most interesting man in college football until his untimely passing last season. Charlotte’s Biff Poggi has taken the crown. The 63-year-old is in his first season with the 49ers after spending several years under Jim Harbaugh at Michigan. Poggi's squad put a scare into Maryland last week, jumping out to a 14-0 lead and holding that lead into the third quarter before the Terps ultimately pulled away. Charlotte's defense has been up for the task this season, holding South Carolina State to three points in Week 1 before intercepting Taulia Tagovailoa twice last week. But it doesn't look like the 49ers' offense is on the same level. Jalon Jones is a threat with his legs, but Charlotte has not gotten anything going in the passing game thus far. Jones connected with Jarius Mack on a 48-yard touchdown pass to open last week's game with Maryland, and the Terps' defense just simply blew the coverage and forgot to cover Mack, leaving him with 25 yards of open room to walk backwards into the end zone. If you remove that play from Jones' stat line, he went 7-for-14 for 68 yards, no touchdowns and an interception. In Week 1 against FCS-level South Carolina State, Jones was 13-for-19 with 125 passing yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. That's not going to cut it. Georgia State's defense held UConn to 3.1 yards per play last week, including 1.5 yards per rushing attempt. The Huskies had the ball 13 times and only entered the Panthers' red zone one time. Poggi will have his team ready and playing hard because that's the kind of coach he is, but the 49ers' haven't shown that they have an offense that is capable of making a significant contribution toward this total.
