Starting Pitchers: List Bielak and Houser
Home Plate Umpire: Mark Ripperger is pitcher-friendly and offers a benefit to the Astros and their scheme for this Wednesday's getaway day event for Dusty Baker's troupe.
Coming into this season Baker had a gut feeling that he would need to have a sixth and seventh starter through the season, early in the season for that matter, and while Bielak is not just the starter for an Opening scheme on Wednesday, do not be surprised if that is what you see. The view is that the Astros use a number of situational relievers behind Brandon B in an Opener like an outline in Milwaukee.
Bielak opened the Spring Training schedule as Houston's starter. Bielak had just eight career starts in 45 regular-season games coming into the season but his ability to throw multiple innings makes him an ideal opener in what Dusty Baker has executed from time to time. that was a bullpen game for some of his team's relievers.
Monday's 12-2 win saw Houston use Martinez, Mushinski, and Stanek for an inning apiece following Javier's six innings of one-run ball. Sunday saw Valdez throw a complete game shutout in just 104 pitches and Saturday Brown threw six solid innings with Stanek, Nens, and Pressly tossing one inning each.
Any sign of trouble for Bielak, hell regardless of his success or lack thereof, the bullpen is rested and ready to get some work in before having Thursday off.
Adrian Houser returned to Milwaukee after completing a rehab assignment with Triple-A Nashville and has been building his pitch count up over the three starts in May. Houser pitched at San Fran, vs Kansas City at Minute Maid and vs Tampa at the Trop in his last start. In all three starts, he has thrown less than 90 pitches and that is likely to be the case vs Houston (who will work the count and get to the Brewers bullpen, one that has been overused due to injuries). Throw in the fact that the Brewers are not in good form at the plate.
This game has all the makings of the World Series champs, and their Hall of Fame manager, earning an easy peasy getaway day victory.
