Betting on a rookie making his first road start at Coors Field has certainly not been a profitably strategy over the years, but Miami's Eury Perez might be the exception to the rule. Why do road pitchers struggle in Denver? Their sliders don't slide the way that they're accustomed to at traditional ballparks. The advantage that Perez will have tonight is that his mystique comes from his arm extension, not necessarily the movement of the pitch. He's only made two starts so his stat profile is far from complete, but Perez is in the 85th percentile among pitchers in extension. That means that at 6-foot-8, he's releasing the ball closer to the mound than almost every other pitcher is able to. So he may struggle with command tonight and his pitches might not go where he's expecting them to go, but with his frame on the mound, he's still going to present the Rockies' lineup with a myriad of problems. His counterpart, Austin Gomber, has a 8.75 ERA with a 1.69 WHIP in five starts at Coors Field this season. Gomber is in the bottom-tenth percentile among pitchers in expected ERA, expected batting average, strikeout rate and chase rate.
