The Padres just simply aren't playing good baseball right now. San Diego has lost eight of its last nine games. Manny Machado is now on the IL, and they were the worst hitting team in the league with him in the lineup. As a team, San Diego is hitting .225 this season. You can't really say they've been unlucky at the plate because the Padres are 22nd in hard-hit rate and 29th in expected batting average. The Oakland A's have scored more runs this season than the San Diego Padres. They will be facing a rejuvenated Chris Sale, who seems to have found something in recent starts. In his last three outings, he's pitched 20.1 innings and given up a total of five runs while striking out 24 and walking two. Boston only used one reliever last night, so the Red Sox bullpen is ready and rested behind him. Boston's lineup is hitting .272 against right-hand pitching this season (No. 1 in MLB) with a .334 on-base percentage (No. 5) and a 113 wRC+ (No. 5). Since his return from injury, Joe Musgrove has allowed 3+ runs in three of his four starts. Walks have been the biggest issue, as he's walked seven batters in his last 10.2 innings. The standings might look different come September if/when the Padres hit their stride, but Boston is playing like the better team right now.
