Matthew Boyd might be pitching to stay in Detroit's rotation tonight, and he's got a pretty tough opponent to do it against. Boyd got rocked for six runs in 1.1 innings against Seattle in his last start. He's in the 32nd percentile among pitchers in strikeout rate this season and he's only cleared this mark twice in seven starts. Boyd is averaging 4.2 innings per start, so he's not pitching deep enough into games to give himself strikeout opportunities. At 18-26, the Nationals probably aren't going to be in MLB headlines very often, but Washington has been very competitive this season, particularly at the plate. The Nationals have the league's best strikeout rate at home, the league's best strikeout rate against left-hand pitching and the league's best whiff rate. Washington's offense is top-10 in weighted on-base average and wRC+ against lefties this season. Detroit had off yesterday, so the Tigers' bullpen should be relatively rested and ready. If Boyd struggles out of the gate like he did in his last start, another quick hook might be on the horizon.
