Let me start with an excerpt from yesterday’s ‘Free Play’ write-up backing the First Five Under between these same two teams.  Numbers have been slightly edited to reflect the results of another low scoring affair last night:

“Let’s take the two bullpens out of the equation and bet against these two slumping lineups on the worst field for hitters in MLB.  The Padres lineup defines the word ‘underachieving’, dead last in all of baseball in batting average with runners in scoring position and coming off a demoralizing weekend in LA.  They’ve scored 4, 0, 2, 2, 3, 3, 6, 2 and 1 run in their last nine ballgames.  The Royals lineup ranks among the weakest in baseball; held to two hits in a shutout loss to open the series.”

San Diego’s Seth Lugo has allowed a grand total of 14 runs in his first seven starts; consistently good.  KC’s Brady Singer is coming off a six inning, one run gem; finally rounding into form after a rough April.  Don’t expect to see any sort of offensive explosion early in this one!  Take the FIRST FIVE INNINGS UNDER.
