The Bulls took down the injury-riddled Timberwolves on Friday night behind a season-high 49 points from DeMar DeRozan. Chicago beat Minnesota in a 139-131 double overtime final score. Minnesota All-Star Anthony Edwards left with a sprained right ankle in the first quarter playing only eight minutes and didn't return. The Wolves continue to scuffle and the loss to the Bulls was their fourth in the team's last five games.
Edwards was initially labeled questionable to return but was later deemed Out. Taurean Prince started the second half in Edwards' place. The replacements for Edwards, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, and Austin Rivers, cannot make up for the All-Star's 25 points per game. Head coach Chris Finch wasn't sure how long he'll be out, though Edwards wasn't ruling out playing at Toronto on Saturday. All reports from the beat writers that cover the team, know Edwards' tendencies and coach Finch's typical handling of ankle injuries have, to a man, called him doubtful or out for Friday's second leg in Toronto for a matchup against the Raptors.
Finch said there are “a lot of dynamics” to Towns' impending return that the Timberwolves “haven't really dug into” because there are still some unknowns, such as whether he will be on a minutes restriction. Towns haven't played since he strained his right calf on Nov. 28 in a game at Washington. The team announced Wednesday that the three-time All-Star is expected to return “in the coming weeks.”
Minnesota lost a double overtime contest to the Bulls in Chicago's United Center on Friday night and the healthy for tonight's event in Toronto will feel the effects of playing 45 minutes or more in the first leg and a victory over a healthy and motivated Raptors squad a long shot at best.
