So much for any Mike Brey bounce for the Irish, who responded with a lackluster effort for their longtime coach in the first game after he announced his pending retirement. The loss to Boston College over the weekend dropped the Irish to 1-13-1 against the spread as a favorite this season. The biggest reasons for this downturn are on the defensive side, where Notre Dame is No. 274 in KenPom's defensive efficiency metrics and bottom-5 in the country in forcing turnovers. NC State dropped a physical, hard-fought game with North Carolina over the weekend. But that was the Wolf Pack's second loss in their last nine games, so Kevin Keatts still has his team pointed on a nice path toward postseason play in March. Leading scorer Terquavion Smith (18.7 points per game) left Saturday’s game at Chapel Hill after a scary fall but suffered no serious injury and could be available tonight. Younger players like freshman LJ Thomas and sophomore Breon Pass have seen an increase in their minutes recently, so even if Smith is unable to go, the Wolf Pack have a balanced attack at their disposal. Notre Dame swept the season series last year, so this is a nice revenge spot for NC State to get a leg up on a poor Irish squad.
