4% Virginia Tech (6:00 ET): I smartly held off a Va Tech side that looked to be taking plenty of “sharp” dollars on Wednesday as the Hokies ended up losing 78-68 at rival Virginia. It was understandable why so many were looking to “buy low” as Va Tech was on a five-game SU/ATS losing streak, dropping all five games as a favorite. But it was not meant to be. Truth be told, the reason I laid off is because my eyes were on this matchup with what I perceive to be a very overrated Clemson team.
Clemson is currently ranked #19 in the country by the AP and Coaches’ polls. But you won’t find them in the KenPom Top 60! I’ve got them #59. So that’s quite the disparity. In fact, only mid-major “darling” Charleston has a wider disparity between my power ratings and the polls when focusing on “Top 25” teams. Sure enough, on Tuesday, we saw Clemson (as a slight underdog) go down at the hands of Wake Forest, 87-77.
I love this spot for Virginia Tech as I’ve got them rated as the better team catching points. When you lose five in a row as favorites, four of those games by five points or less, you figure to have a pretty poor “luck rating” and that is the case here with Va Tech (#337 in luck). This will be just the second time in the L6 games that Clemson comes in as the favorite. There’s only been one time all year that they’ve been favored by more than three points against an ACC opponent and that was hapless Louisville (who they failed to cover against!). Take the points, expect an outright win. 4% Virginia Tech (Play to Pick).
