In the Main Event of UFC 283 a title fight between Glover Teixeira vs Jamahal Hill…
Can old man Glover do it again?? Let's discuss.
Ok, I get it Jamahal Hill has looked fantastic going 6-1 since entering the UFC with 5 of which by knockout. Some iffy chins he sparked out but some nice KO wins nonetheless. Now at 43, Glover has probably looked the best he has in years. This is no ordinary aging UFC former champion yet after a rough patch most wrote him off. Currently on a 6-1 run as well including winning the title along the way displays Teixeira's not done. No doubt on the feet Hill has an advantage with rangy combinations, quick hands and power… but overall this is a horrible match up stylistically for Jamahal. The biggest red flag is in Hill's most recent bout against Thiago Santos. Yes Hill won but the issue is Santos took Hill down 6 times. That's a tremendous amount of takedowns for a guy that has limited takedown ability or offensive wrestling, yet Hill struggled to defend. Even in his bout against Darko Stosic, Jamahal was taken down 6 times as well. Besides those 2 fights he's truly not faced anyone else with level changing ability or grappling. If Santos can latch on to Hill dragging him to the mat… so can Glover. The difference is if Hill's back hits the mat there's a high probability Glover sinks in a sub or ground and pounds him to death. On the mat Glover will slide through Hills guard like a hot knife through butter. Over the last 3 bouts Glover has successfully taken his opponents down 11 times. All takedowns are well timed, hidden behind strikes or chain wrestling until obtains position wanted. I don't believe Hill stays upright for long and the threat of takedowns will distract Jamahal from cutting distance to land or being timid in pocket. This should open windows for Glover to level change or counter attack on feet. Plus Glover was preparing awhile ago for Jiri fight whom has waaaay more weapons than Hill. Far better grappling, stronger in clinch, extremely unorthodox, better footwork and overall better striker. Now he's facing Hill who's more of just a rangy boxer with power. This sets up nicely for Glover to control the action and find multiple takedowns either finding a finish or controlling Hill on the ground round after round.
