Giants (9:45PM ET SNLA, NBCSBA, MLB.TV) – SSG loses a heartbreaker 3-2 and we settle for a KBO split to start the week. I’ve been laying low the last couple days in MLB because there’s been a ton of moving parts with the trade deadline but all the uncertainty is over and I’m jumping back in and putting my streak on the line as we go for EIGHT consecutive 5% MAX BET winners in a row when the San Francisco Giants take on the Los Angeles Dodgers at Oracle Park in San Francisco, California.
The Giants have been a fade candidate most of the season for me but I think they are massively undervalued and in a good spot here. For starters, the Giants were a team rumored to be a “seller” at the deadline but that didn’t happen and I think it sends a message to this group of players that the front office has faith in this team to win now. Personally I don’t think that happens but I do think it could give the Giants a jolt in the short term and I’m going to try to ride that vote of confidence to a win here. The Giants enter play just 4.5 games back of the final Wild Card spot so they certainly aren’t out of and they also enter on back to back losses which means some urgency to win here. On top of needing a win they play their biggest rival, the Dodgers, so to say the Giants “want this one” would be a massive understatement. Since it’s the mighty Dodgers the line is inflated which means we can get the Giants in what I believe to be a great spot for them on the +1.5 run line at a very cheap price. I like the Giants to win this game but the fact I still cash a ticket if they lose by one and only have to lay -123 to do so makes this a spot where I’m happy to jump in with a 5% MAX BET.
Before this game kicks off it’s going to be well known that legendary Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully passed away and I don’t see how that helps the Dodgers in any way here. I’m sure we will hear the “win one for Vin” narrative but a lot of these Dodgers players (and especially any veteran in the Dodgers organization) probably looks at Scully like a grandfather so that news is likely to hit hard and could serve as more of a distraction than a motivator. Any potential distraction needs to be considered because the Dodgers have been an absolute machine the past month winning 25 of their last 30 games. The Dodgers have now won six straight against the Giants including 8 of 11 this season but there’s precedence for the win streak ending as you would have to go back to 1980 for the last time the Dodgers beat the Giants seven consecutive times. The Dodgers give the ball to Julio Urias here, he was the pitcher of record the last time the Giants beat the Dodgers back in early June but has been stellar with a 2.58 ERA over his last eight starts. Urias also has excellent career numbers against the Giants but this will now be the fourth time San Francisco is seeing him this season and I’m going to bank on the Giants hitters making the adjustment. As far as “elite” bullpens are concerned I have the Dodgers relief unit ranked a notch below that despite the fact they are priced/viewed as one of the top units in the league. I’m happy to take my chances against Craig Kimbrel and his 4.25 ERA and 1.50 WHIP at the end of a game if it comes to it though I think the Giants will have already done enough to be in position here.
San Francisco counters with Alex Cobb who, despite taking the loss, comes off one of his most impressive outings of the season where he went six innings and gave up one run while racking up 11 strikeouts. Cobb has had a bunch of impressive outings of late, he’s lasted six or more innings in four of his last five starts and one of those was a 7.1 inning gem against the Brewers. Cobb is insanely unlucky to not have a win in any of those, the veteran right hander has gone 10 starts without registering a win yet has a 3.36 ERA in that span. Cobb has an ERA under 3 since coming off the IL back in June and most of the guys in this Dodgers lineup have barely seen him. The Giants quietly dealt for a couple relievers that should bolster their bullpen and their relief unit has been shockingly bad so I’m going to count on a shake up in the bullpen leading to some positive regression in that department for the Giants. It’s a huge spot for the home team, if Cobb turns in another good start I think the Giants find a way to get him that elusive win.
Even last night when the Giants dug themselves a huge hole it was still a one run game in the 8th inning. I can’t see San Francisco getting blown out again, I think the Giants win and if they don’t I’ll take my chances the loss is by a single run. Play on Giants +1.5 (-123) for 5% (or 5 units)
