List Pitchers: Miley and Clevinger
HP Umpire: Scott Barry is pitcher-friendly, but he comes along with some dependency issues. He prefers pitchers that work fast and attacks the zone. He has little tolerance for whining about the zone, be it for being too small or too large. The new-look Kluber Lang doesn't have a knockout punch as he did in yesteryear. His Velo has fallen off the table, which of course, makes him a finesse pitcher that is picking and prodding for the spot inside of an umpire Kzone that is vulnerable for hitters and friendly for pitchers, that spot in Barry's K-zone that has a favorable chance of being called a strike when it is in truth a borderline ball at best.
Weather: It is San Diego in May. First-pitch temps are forecast to be in the mid-70s with little to no breeze and no precipitation forecast.
The Cubs have yet to be who I believe them to be but the current roster - however, it is early, and when all 30 teams have met their regression-maker, the cream will prevent the diluted products from following.
There weren't any top-shelf experiences expected of the Cubs this season. What was happened at the end of April when the ivy-covered club finished the month with a 2-9 mark.
The Cubs were uber-dependent on veterans Kyle Hendricks and Marcus Stroman to keep them out of the bottom of the division. The Cubbies' dialogue could be a .500 club with solid seasons from their two right-handed starts was talk.
LHP Wade Miley starts tonight in San Diego following four shutout innings for Triple-A Iowa on May 5. It was his lone rehab work against live hitters. Miley threw 41 pitches (28 strikes), struck out three, gave up two hits, and issued zero walks in a road outing against St. Paul.
In this situation tonight, I will argue that Mike Clevinger is the most likely starter to pitch past seven innings without allowing a run. The lone prohibitive to that scenario is that the Cubs hitters fail to put the ball into play early in counts, and Clevinger might well register 8-plus strikeouts, which would see his pitch count climb to a level he isn't allowed to strut to the mound in the seventh inning.
The former Cleveland Indian top of the rotation right-hander, wasn't a part of the decision in his season debut on Wednesday. Clevinger surrendered three runs on four hits with four K's against three walks in 4 2/3 innings. The debut was against his former Cleveland franchise, and the emotional start limited his energy to pitch much deeper than five innings. The Padres righty missed all of 2021 due to Tommy John surgery.
