The M’s were a rude guest last night as they blanked the A’s 9-0 in game two of this three game series.<\/p>\n Southpaw Robbie Ray takes the bump and looks to help complete the series sweep against right-hander Frankie Montas. Seattle is a -135 road favorite, the A’s are a +115 home underdog and the run total is 7.<\/p>\n Starter Robbie Ray was Seattle’s prize free agent signing in the off season, and the team expected great things for their five year, $115 million investment. This season didn’t start well for him though, as his ERA was at 4.97 earlier this month. The left-hander had problems with control as he gave up 14 home runs and 29 walks in his first 12 starts.<\/p>\n However, he’s regained the form of a top AL pitcher in his last two outings. Against Boston and the Angels he pitched 7.0 innings, gave up three hits each game and one earned run in both starts combined.<\/p>\n The Mariners will need Ray and the rest of their pitching staff to perform really well to have a chance at a wildcard berth in a very tough American League.<\/p>\n Seattle’s hitting is middle of the pack, as they’re 14th best in OPS against right handed pitchers at .717 with a .243 team batting average.<\/p>\n There’s not much great that I can write about the A’s. They don’t hit any type of pitcher well, and are 28th in OPS against southpaws.<\/p>\n The team’s owners really did this team dirty before the season by trading off almost all their best players. It looks like the ownership wants a reason to be able to move the team to a better and more profitable city, such as Las Vegas.<\/p>\n The Athletics have the worst home record in MLB at 8-27 and the worst overall record at 23-47. Although the A’s numbers aren’t great, even the worst teams in baseball will win about one of every three games on average. And the home team is due for a win after they lost the last two in this series.Frankie Montas is one of the A’s better pitchers and could be dealt at the trade deadline this year.<\/p>\n He’s put up decent numbers this year in 14 starts with a 3-7 record, a 3.53 ERA, a 1.14 WHIP with 84 strikeouts over 81.2 innings of work. But the Athletics’ offense hasn’t given him much support, with an average of 2.95 runs each time he’s on the mound.<\/p>\n I really want to find a reason to back the home team other than they’re due for a win… but I can’t.
