The last time the event was held here was 2010 in which Carl Pettersson won over Dean Wilson.

The best way to describe this week’s field is top heavy. Most of those that teed up last week at The Memorial Tournament are not playing this week, but they few that skipped last week are here including World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, reigning PGA Champion Justin Thomas, the defending champion Rory McIlroy, The Players champion Cameron Smith and three-time winner this year Sam Burns all ranking in the top-10 Official World Golf Rankings. Not bad for the week before the US Open.

However, from there, the list falls off quite a bit with only nine of the top-25 in the field and 12 of the top-50 as several of those in that second category are playing across the pond in the rivaled LIV Golf inaugural event.

St George’s is a par-70 stretching to just over 7,000 yards, which is short by PGA Tour standards. Course management is a must with greens averaging just 4,000 square feet, which to put in perspective, Pebble Beach is the smallest on Tour at 3,500 while each of the last two events at Muirfield and Colonial, both average around 5,000.

ough can reach as high as six inches so hitting fairways will be important and while putting is not likely to be a major factor as most will be unfamiliar with the greens which should level the playing field.

Finally, weather will be comfortable with forecasted highs about 70 degrees. Rain is probable for more than one day, which could make the course play softer, while winds are moderate averaging 10-15 mph all four days.

Nick’s Betting Favorites

From Nick Borrman: With the last edition coming in 2010, course history is not a factor this week. Instead, focus on tee-to-green specialists. Look out for one of my favorite angles which is a guy coming off a missed cut (ahem, Matthew Fitzpatrick or Justin Thomas) but perhaps avoid those that will be looking ahead to next week’s US Open (OK, now I’ve confused myself on Justin Thomas). Oh, and it is probably savvy to avoid the homefield advantage as no Canadian has won this event since 1954.

Shane Lowry +2000 (Bet365) | Top-10 +225 (Bet365)
Call me a glutton for punishment, but here we go again. Last week was a ‘down week’ as Lowry broke his streak of 11-straight top-25s finishing T32 at The Memorial. But in this top-heavy, watered-down field, I expect him in contention on Sunday. Lowry has been one of the most consistent players in the world over the last six months finishing inside the top-14 in nine of his last 12 tournaments.

I mentioned how important ball-striking is this week and Lowry has been great as he sits No. 11 in Strokes Gained Approach thanks to ranking No. 2 in proximity to the hole. When he misses, few players are better as Lowry ranks No. 1 in scrambling and No. 8 in sand saves. All of which leads to the sixth-best scoring average on Tour this season.

Matthew Fitzpatrick +2000 (Bet365) | Top-10 +225 (Bet365)
I loved Fitzpatrick last week at The Memorial, but now I love him even more this week after his missed cut. That seems odd to say, but it’s not very often you see a player rank second in the field in Strokes Gained tee-to-green, yet fail to make the weekend. He ranked dead last in Strokes Gained putting, which can be volatile week-to-week as he still ranks a respectable No. 32 on the season.

While it’s now three missed cuts in this last 12 starts, when Fitzpatrick makes the weekend, he is in contention with all nine finishes inside the top-14 including seven in the top-10.

Fitzpatrick’s Strokes Gained numbers are impressive, ranking No. 11 off the tee, No. 8 around the green and No. 3 tee-to-green which all lead to him being No. 1 in Total Strokes Gained this season with the fourth-best scoring average.

BEST BET Brendan Todd Top-40 +110 (DK)
I missed my best bet on Matt Kuchar top-40 last week by one shot, but this week I’m looking at the super accurate Brendan Todd. Todd ranks No. 5 on Tour in driving accuracy and is year in and year out one of the best putters on tour, ranking No. 6 this year and No. 8 last year. He also has a very strong short game ranking No. 12 in scrambling.

Todd has been playing some solid golf finishing inside the top-40 in four of his last six starts including a solo third in his last start at the Charles Schwab Challenge, while also ranking No. 15 in this field in Total Strokes Gained over the last two months.

Interested in placing a bet on this week’s RBC Canadian Open?
