At the time of posting, the Ducks are a 7-point home favorite over the Mustangs, with the total at 145.5 points.

Stay on top of the latest College Basketball updates direct from Las Vegas!

Oregon vs SMU Predictions

Oregon Ducks -7 vs SMU Mustangs

Total: 145.5 points

Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene, Oregon

11pm ET / 8pm PT

Pac-12 Network

Both teams took care of business in the season opening tune-up. SMU beat McNeese State 86-62 while Oregon beat Texas Southern by a similar score, 83-66. Usually such beat-downs do not tell much about a team, but in Oregon’s case the win was very educational. Oregon coach Dana Altman has said in the press that he is using November and December as a work in progress to see what he has. The opening game was exactly that. The Ducks played nine players for more than five minutes and seven players scored 7 or more points. Four players had double digit scoring.

Oregon’s star is guard Will Richardson. Richardson is one of 20 players nationwide to be named to the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year watch list. He had 20 points and shot 50% from the field in the opening game. Forward Quincy Guerrier had 12 points and 12 rebounds. Guerrier averaged 13.7 points and 8.4 rebounds in the ACC with Syracuse and gives Oregon a power presence who will create matchup problems in the Pac-12. Oregon also has two great defensive Centers in Franck Kepnang and Nathan Bittle. They also return Eric Williams Jr. and N’Faly Dante. The Ducks are always a good free throw shooting team and shot 90.5% in the opener.

SMU has NCAA Tournament hopes this year after being in the NIT last year. They start all seniors led by unanimous preseason All-American Athletic Conference First Team selection Kendric Davis. Last year he led the AAC in scoring (19.0) and assists (7.6, 4th in the NCAA). He was the only player in the country to lead a conference in both scoring and assists.

SMU also returns Emmanuel Bandoumel (10.2 ppg) and Isaiah Jasey. Transfer Zach Nutall was the Southland Conference Player of the Year last season at Sam Houston, Marcus Weathers was a 2-time All-Atlantic 10 player for Duquesne, and Michael Weathers from Texas Southern was the SWAC Newcomer of the Year last season.

SMU is comprised of a mix and match of talented players. The talent is there but can they play together as a unit? As Seniors they have the maturity but Oregon has a huge advantage at depth. I think SMU can compete at the start, but as the game drags on Oregon is just too refined for SMU to keep up with. Oregon has the balance, shotting, accuracy and power that can wear down a thin team like SMU.

I would lay the seven points in this Oregon vs SMU matchup. The Ducks should be able to stretch a lead in the second half with their depth and superior coaching.

Nice underdog cover Vermont +5.5
My numbers had them a favorite

See my Japanese baseball and basketball plays including a 4% out now at my @WagerTalk pagehttps://t.co/cahGi7E8bx

— Tokyo Brandon 🔴 (@JPBaseballTV) November 12, 2021

Oregon vs SMU Analysis from The GoldSheet

The Ducks handled a Texas Southern team that reached last March’s NCAA Tournament 83-66 in their first game without current Indiana Pacers wing Chris Duarte and former transfers Eugene Omoruyi, L.J. Figueroa and Amauri Hardy. Dana Altman reloaded via the transfer portal, scoring commitments from Rutgers guard Jacob Young, Duquesne forward Eric Williams, Syracuse forward Quincy Guerrier and Oklahoma guard Devion Harmon. That group will join forces with point guard Will Richardson and young centers N’Faly Dante and Franck Kepnang to form this season’s nucleus at Oregon, so you can understand where Altman is coming from when he says he expects his group will be a “work in progress” until at least December.
