Cookout Southern 500<\/strong> Track: Darlington Raceway<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Cook Out Southern 500<\/strong> takes place at Darlington Raceway<\/strong>, a 1.366-mile egg-shaped oval known as \u201cThe Track Too Tough to Tame\u201d<\/em> and one of the most demanding tracks on the NASCAR schedule. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Darlington\u2019s two ends are completely different, forcing teams to compromise on setup while drivers constantly adjust their approach from one end of the track to the other. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The old, abrasive asphalt absolutely eats up tires, creating major falloff during long  runs and making tire management one of the biggest factors in the race. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drivers typically run inches from the outside wall searching for speed, and getting the famous  \u201cDarlington Stripe\u201d<\/strong> is almost unavoidable over the course of 500 miles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Southern 500 is a NASCAR crown jewel and an endurance test where patience, long-run speed, pit strategy, and  keeping the car clean are all critical. Denny Hamlin, Kyle Larson, William Byron, and Tyler Reddick<\/strong> have been among the drivers to show strong speed at Darlington in recent years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is  one of my favorite tracks on the entire schedule because there is simply nothing else like it\u2014 Darlington is weird, difficult, destroys tires, and forces drivers to earn every single lap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cookout Southern 500<\/strong> Head to Head Prediction: Denny Hamlin over Kyle Larson<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The playoffs are here, and this is exactly the type of spot where I want to back Denny Hamlin<\/strong>. This could realistically be one of his final opportunities to win that elusive NASCAR championship, and he enters the postseason having been in arguably the best car on the bigger ovals all year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hamlin has recorded 14 Top-11 finishes on ovals three-quarters of a mile or  longer<\/strong>, giving him a level of consistency that Kyle Larson simply hasn’t matched. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Darlington makes the matchup even more attractive. Over the last seven races at this track,  Hamlin ranks #1 in average finishing position<\/strong>, while Larson ranks 24th with an average finish of 21st<\/strong>. Larson obviously has the talent to win anywhere, but recently this track has  treated these two drivers very differently. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Larson has also been incredibly feast-or-famine this season. He has 13 Top-10 finishes<\/strong>, but he’s  also finished outside the Top 20 twelve times<\/strong>. Amazingly, he has only two finishes between 10th and 20th<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He’s either contending near the front or running into trouble, and that’s not the  profile I want against someone as consistent as Hamlin has been on these tracks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Qualifying will be important because track position and pit selection matter tremendously at Darlington. If Hamlin qualifies near the front and secures a premium pit stall, his team is going  to be extremely difficult to beat on pit road. That could provide another significant advantage throughout a long Southern 500. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We’re getting the more consistent oval performer, the better recent Darlington results and a  veteran entering the playoffs knowing the championship window isn’t getting any bigger. Denny Hamlin over Kyle Larson<\/strong> is the play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
