Laurel Park is a one-mile oval, and the configuration changes how bettors should evaluate pace, positioning and late runners.

The Preakness distance remains the same, but the stretch is different from Pimlico. The Laurel Park stretch is shorter than what bettors are used to seeing at Pimlico, and that naturally raises questions about deep closers who need time to build momentum.

Will Speed Hold Up in the Preakness?

Speed has often held up at Laurel and Pimlico, especially across major race cards. However, it will be important to watch races Thursday, Friday and early Saturday to see whether the dirt is favoring speed or playing fair.

Laurel’s wider, more sweeping turns may also help stalkers and closers compared to Pimlico’s tighter turns. Wider turns can allow horses to maintain momentum and slingshot into the stretch.

That makes the 2026 Preakness pace picture especially important, because several horses want to be forward early.

Preakness Stakes Odds: Iron Honor the Favorite at 9-2

Iron Honor enters as the 9-2 favorite from post nine, but whether he deserves that role is debatable.

The Case for Iron Honor

Iron Honor fits the Chad Brown playbook. Brown has skipped the Kentucky Derby before with horses pointed specifically to the Preakness, winning with Cloud Computing and Early Voting. Iron Honor also picks up Flavien Prat, a major jockey upgrade.

There is an argument that Iron Honor had excuses in the Wood Memorial, where he was wide and took contact into the first turn. With blinkers coming off, the hope is that Iron Honor settles better and makes one strong move into a pace that could be quick.

The Concern With Iron Honor

The biggest concern is that Iron Honor comes into the Preakness off the worst race of his short career. The blinkers-off move could be a smart fix, but it could also signal that the connections are still searching for answers.

For Preakness Stakes predictions, Iron Honor looks usable underneath and dangerous with Prat, but he may be shorter than ideal from a value perspective.

<meta itemprop="description" content="Preakness Stakes 2026 picks including best bets, longshots, trifecta strategy and horse racing betting analysis. Jose Ortiz comes in hot after winning the Kentucky Derby aboard Golden Tempo and also winning the Oaks.

Chip Hancho is not the same type of horse as Golden Tempo. He is expected to be closer to the pace rather than making one deep closing run. He profiles as a big horse with high cruising speed, most effective when he gets into a steady rhythm rather than producing a sudden turn of foot.

The Pace Problem for Chip Hancho

The concern is that there is a lot of gate speed in this field, including Taj Mahal, Great White and Robusta. Chip Hancho may not have enough early burst to stay comfortably near the leaders, and he may not have enough late kick to hold off closers.

Still, Chip Hancho is a live contender thanks to Ortiz, a fresh setup, and his Risen Star effort, where he finished well ahead of eventual Derby winner Golden Tempo at the same distance and surface.

Taj Mahal: Local Horse, Local Story, Short Price

Taj Mahal is 5-1 from post one and brings one of the best storylines in the 2026 Preakness Stakes. He is three-for-three at Laurel Park, trained by Brittany Russell, and ridden by her husband.

Why Laurel Experience Matters

Only two horses in the field have raced at Laurel, and Taj Mahal’s local experience is a clear positive. He does not need to ship in, adjust to new surroundings or change his routine.

That matters because horses can react poorly to travel or new environments, especially when preparing for a major race.

Why the Value May Be Gone

The concern is price. Taj Mahal won the Federico Tesio, a win-and-you’re-in Preakness prep, but previous Tesio winners entering the Preakness have not had much success. This year is unique because both the prep and the Preakness are at Laurel, but Taj Mahal’s competition level remains a question.

He also drew inside and has speed, which helps his position, but there are several other speed horses signed on. Expect him to take money because of the undefeated record, home-track angle and trainer storyline, making him more attractive for exactas and trifectas than as a win bet.

Kentucky Derby Horses in the Preakness

Running back in two weeks is not as common or easy as it once was. Modern horses are generally trained with more time between starts, often a month or more. Derby horses now have to overcome the quick turnaround plus shipping.

Ocelli: Derby Third, Still a Maiden

Ocelli is 6-1 from post two after finishing third in the Kentucky Derby. The issue is that he has still never won a race.

Ocelli got an ideal trip in the Derby, dropping back and making one run, similar to Golden Tempo and Renegade. But going from 70-1 in the Derby to 6-1 in the Preakness is a major price change, especially for a maiden trying to make a Grade 1 race his first career win.

Longshot Preakness Stakes Picks

Great White at 15-1

Great White did not race in the Kentucky Derby after flipping in the gate and being scratched. He has since been cleared and worked back, but post 13 creates a challenge.

From that outside draw, Great White likely has to use speed early to establish position. That could force him into fast fractions and leave him backing up late.

Robusta at 30-1

Robusta was the final horse added to the Kentucky Derby field after scratches. He looks more like a pace factor than a win threat.

He has gate speed and could pressure horses like Taj Mahal and Great White, but the concern is whether he has the finishing kick to stay around late.

Talking at 20-1

Talking is one of the most interesting value plays at 20-1. The morning-line price looks high for a horse that broke his maiden first out and has since raced only in graded stakes.

Talking has faced quality competition, owns recent speed figures of 85 and 87, and now makes his third start off the layoff, which can be a strong form-cycle angle. The addition of Irad Ortiz Jr. only strengthens the case.

The Hell We Did at 15-1

The Hell We Did draws post seven and picks up Luis Saez. The horse has closed into tighter-turn tracks before and now may get quick fractions to run at.

With the amount of early speed signed on, The Hell We Did could sit back, settle into stride and make one late run down the stretch.

Best 2026 Preakness Stakes Predictions

For a team-ticket approach, Incredibles at 5-1 from post 12 deserves serious consideration. The case is based on a tough Kentucky Derby trip, where Incredibles had to check after being carried sideways by Renegade before regaining momentum and finishing sixth.

With Golden Tempo, Renegade, Chief Wally B and Danon Bourbon not in this field, Incredibles profiles as one of the best Derby runners returning for the Preakness.

Iron Honor is also a major player if the Wood Memorial trouble is forgiven and the blinkers-off change helps him settle. Chip Hancho remains dangerous with Jose Ortiz and a cleaner setup, while Taj Mahal must be respected because of his Laurel Park record and early speed.

Final Preakness Stakes Betting Outlook

The 2026 Preakness Stakes odds board is wide open, and the move to Laurel Park adds another layer to the handicap. Speed is dangerous, but a contested pace could set the table for stalkers and closers.

For bettors building Preakness Stakes picks and trifectas, Iron Honor, Chip Hancho, Taj Mahal and Incredibles all demand respect, while Talking and The Hell We Did offer the most interesting longshot value from the transcript’s handicapping discussion.

The 2026 Preakness Stakes brings a very different setup than horseplayers are used to seeing.

["GET
