He suffered an almost life-threatening machete attack in Tenerife in early 2015 and after returning to the sport six months later, faced a series of tune-ups against the likes of Jo-Jo Dan, Frankie Gavin and Kevin Bizier over in the UK.

But the division had moved on. Thurman had numerous dance partners over that time at welterweight and with Danny Garcia moving up from 140, Shawn Porter making a resurgence at the weight and new names such as Errol Spence on the horizon, the division looked to have passed Kell Brook by.

With the news of his main domestic rival Amir Khan taking on Canelo Alvarez in a huge fight up at middleweight, Brook opted to go one better and jumped up two weight divisions to take on the most feared boxer on the planet at that time in Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin.

The subsequent beating Kell Brook took in that fight was enough to completely smash his eyesocket and put him out of commission for almost a full year before coming back down in weight to face Errol Spence over in the UK who subsequently smashed Brook’s other eyesocket, and it’s fair to say Kell Brook’s career hasn’t recovered since.

Amir Khan, the UK’s Golden Child

Contrary to Brook’s rise through the domestic scene in the UK which featured a lot of small hall domestic shows, Amir Khan was fast-tracked pretty quickly to the top and was already fighting for world titles in the U.S. while Brook was still fighting for regional titles back home.

Khan was an Olympic silver medallist at the 2004 Olympic Games and had won numerous gold’s at world championship level also before turning pro, and was considered a natural successor to the hugely popular British fighter Ricky Hatton.

Despite a few hiccups along the way against the likes of Breidis Prescott, Khan dominated the domestic scene and went on to beat Paulie Malignaggi, Marcos Maidana and Zab Judah among others over in the U.S. before suffering back to back defeats against Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia which derailed his career.

However, Kahn got back on track with a sensational performance against Devon Alexander at the end of 2014 and it looked to have put him right back in the mix at 147 before a stunning announcement to have him move up and fight superstar Canelo Alvarez at middleweight.

That was a bridge too far however, and despite looking good early in that one, Canelo finally caught up to his man and knocked him out cold with a vicious overhand right that closed the show at the end of the 6th round.

Since then, Khan’s career has petered out, similar to how Brook’s has, which is why we’re seeing this fight happening now at the twilight of both men’s careers.

Amir Khan vs Kell Brook Prediction

It’s fair to say Amir Khan has potentially achieved as much as he was ever going to in boxing over the long course of his career. An olympic silver medallist with two world titles to his name, blessed with incredible hand speed, he was a legitimate force at both light-welterweight and welterweight over the span of his career.

Kell Brook on the other hand is a much more interesting story. One of the finest fighters to ever come out of the UK at welterweight, some bad luck and poor decision-making as seen his career possibly not live up to the heights it could have, especially with the talent he possessed.

Pre-GGG or Spence, I would have no issue whatsoever in picking Brook to win this fight, possibly quite comfortably. Bar Khan’s hand speed, Brook has every other advantage in the book over his rival, timing, precision, power, and his wincobank style would have been a real headache for Khan at that time.

However, a lot has changed since then. Brook is a broken fighter who has undergone numerous surgeries and operations with steel grafts put in around his eyesockets, but Terence Crawford showed how fragile those eye injuries are by effectively stopping Brook with a simple jab in their fight just over a year ago.

Despite both fighters being a similar age, Khan is the much fresher fighter of the two heading into this one, and while I believe talent wise Brook is the superior boxer here, his numerous injuries, especially around the eyes, have simply had too much of an effect and I expect Amir Khan to overwhelm Brook at some point on Saturday and get the stoppage.

Take Amir Khan to win by KO/TKO (+350) on Saturday night against Kell Brook.

Interested in placing a bet on Saturday’s Amir Khan vs Kell Brook showdown?
