Last season, Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II became just the second defensive back to win the award since 2010 (Stephon Gilmore 2019). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Surtain intercepted four passes, with 11 passes defended, a forced fumble, a recovery and a tackle for a loss in 16 starts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, sacks are one of the easiest quantifiable statistics for a defensive player to show value to their team. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, it makes sense that all of the favorites to win the award are pass rushers. The award has been won by defensive linemen or edge rushers in 11 of the past 14 seasons. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Myles Garrett won the DPOY in 2023 after finishing top 10 in every notable category including sacks, QB hits, tackles for a loss, QB pressures and forced fumbles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nick Bosa won the award in 2022 after an 18.5 sack season while TJ Watt got DPOY honors after a 21.5 sack campaign in 2021. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Micah Parsons has flirted with the award, finishing as the runner-up in two of his first three seasons in the NFL. Aaron Donald brought home DPOY honors three times in his amazing stretch with the Rams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2025 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Prediction: Aidan Hutchinson, Lions (+650)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A gruesome leg ended Aidan Hutchinsons 2024 campaign after only five games, but he’s back on the field with the Detroit Lions training camp with no restrictions and his play has impressed new defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sheppard has been with the Lions defensive staff since 2021, so he’s seen Hutchinsons development, and he’s convinced the experience made Hutchinson a better player. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hutchinson looked like he would be in contention to win this award before fracturing his leg as he logged 7.5 sacks in five games, giving him 28.5 sacks in 39 career games. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 24-year-old is also very effective in coverage as he’s logged four interceptions in his shortened three-year career. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hutchinson is actually listed among the favorites to win the Comeback Player of the Year which is rare for a defensive player. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lions are looking to build on a stellar 15-2 season, and they only team with better odds of winning the NFC are the Superbowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If Hutchinson stays healthy, he will surely be on voter’s radars as a crucial part of championship-caliber defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/a>\n
