The SoCon has a history of being very competitive during the regular season, but when the conference tournament rolls around, the top seeds usually move on. Per college basketball analyst Will Warren, the average seed of the SoCon Tournament winner since 2012 is 1.3. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The No. 1 seed has won the tournament in eight of the last 12 opportunities. Even though Furman and Wofford can both lay claim to being much better than their seeds would indicate, it’s still quite rare to see the No. 5 seed face the No. 6 seed on championship Monday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
For those unfamiliar with Palmetto State geography, Furman and Wofford are separated by about 35 miles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Harrah’s Cherokee Center in Asheville is about an hour away from both universities, so both fanbases should be well represented for this championship game. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Paladins and Terriers split their regular season series with each team winning on the other’s home court. Early money has shown on the under in this contest, and we’re not sure that we agree with it. The last seven meetings between these teams have seen an average of 150.4 points per game. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
All seven of those games would have cleared the total of 137.5 that we are seeing on Monday morning. The over is 4-1 in Wofford’s last five games. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The over is 7-3-1 in Furman’s last 11 games. Wofford scored 1.20 points per possession against East Tennessee State on Saturday, then 1.42 points per possession against VMI on Sunday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Terriers shot a combined 41.1-percent from three-point range in those two games, so they are clearly enjoying the sight lines in Asheville. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Furman scored 1.34 points per possession against Samford on Friday, then 1.16 points per possession against Chattanooga on Sunday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Paladins shot a combined 50.9-percent from three-point range in those two games, so they are clearly enjoying the scoring conditions in this tournament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wofford vs Furman Predictions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
When these teams met in Spartanburg last Saturday to close the regular season, Wofford opened that game 4-for-18 from the floor and didn’t reach double-digit points until the eight-minute mark of the first half. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
We still saw 153 points in that contest. Both teams are top-25 in the country in three-point shot attempts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This appears to be one of the rare cases where we simply do not agree that the conference championship total should be significantly lower than the closing totals during the regular season. We have no interest in fading either offense right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
