Josh Schertz (formerly at Indiana State, now at Saint Louis) and Darian DeVries (formerly at Drake, now at West Virginia) have each done a very nice job in their first year at the helm at new programs, but we’re beginning to see their respective teams wear down at the end of the season. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Life in the Big 12 and A-10 looks a little different than it did in the Missouri Valley Conference. Coach Schertz has lost three in a row at Saint Louis, and the Mountaineers have lost six of their last eight. Lack of depth is unquestionably the issue at both locations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
West Virginia senior forward Tucker DeVries will miss the rest of the season. With DeVries in the lineup, West Virginia beat Gonzaga and Arizona earlier this season. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Without him, everything has been a grind. West Virginia is scoring an average of 63.1 points per game in Big 12 play. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Mountaineers have been held to 60 points or fewer six times in their last 12 games. West Virginia is coming off a 74-71 overtime loss at Baylor on Saturday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Four Mountaineers played at least 35 minutes, including 41 by starting point guard Javon Small. Cincinnati closed as a six-point home favorite over West Virginia when these teams met on February 2. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
We were on the Mountaineers in that contest under the general principle that the Bearcats should not have been favored by more than one possession in an evenly-matched contest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The teams are flipped, but we’re still sticking with that exact same principle. Since mid-December, West Virginia is 2-4 against the spread as a favorite. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Mountaineers are last in the Big 12 in offensive rebounding and last in free throw attempts. If you can’t generate second-chance opportunities and you can’t get to the free throw line, everything is going to be a struggle on offense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cincinnati vs West Virginia Predictions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
In their first meeting this season, Cincinnati held a 12-5 edge in offensive rebounds. Bearcats’ star guard Jizzle James was held scoreless in that contest, going 0-for-8 from the floor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Since that loss, James has scored 24 vs BYU, 25 vs Utah and 25 vs Iowa State. This will be the fifth meeting between these squads over the last two seasons. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The underdog has covered the spread in three of the first four, including two outright upset wins. We’re expecting the Bearcats to add to that total on Wednesday night in Morgantown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
