Saint Mary’s head coach Randy Bennett is organizing another fantastic season in Moraga, but we can’t help but notice the massive difference in schedules that these two WCC contenders have played thus far. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Gaels are off to a 6-0 start in conference play as they look to defend their WCC title from last year, but all six of those wins have come against the bottom-5 teams in the conference. Saint Mary’s has not played a single team in the top-half of the conference yet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
That will change on Thursday as the Gaels welcome San Francisco to University Credit Union Pavilion. The Dons are off to a 6-2 start in conference play, but unlike Saint Mary’s, San Francisco has already played upper-tier programs like Santa Clara (twice), Oregon State and Washington State. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
San Francisco is coming off back-to-back wins over Pepperdine and Oregon State. Saint Mary’s defense is one of the best in the country, but we have some concerns with the Gaels’ ability to create margin in this contest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
We already mentioned the very weak conference schedule that Saint Mary’s has played thus far. The Gaels are only shooting 48.4-percent from two-point range in those six contests, which is 2.6-percent below the national average. That’s a little concerning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saint Mary’s is shooting below the national average from two-point range and the free throw line, and the Gaels are outside the top-300 in three-point attempts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
You can get away with that against Pacific and Portland, but beating San Francisco by double digits is a different story. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
When these teams met in Moraga last season, Saint Mary’s won by four in a game that neither team led by more than seven points. We’re anticipating a similar back-and-forth contest in this one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
