Following DePaul’s 85-83 overtime loss to Marquette on Tuesday, Blue Demons’ head coach Chris Holtmann said, “This thing is going to get turned around. I promise you. It might not be as quickly as all of us want, but it’s going to get turned and I promise you that.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n
We believe him. After a promising start to the season, DePaul has started 0-7 in Big East play with three of those losses coming in overtime. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
If you watch the postgame press conference from the opposing coaches after they play DePaul, almost all of them are saying the same thing: This team is different. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Blue Demons have been stuck at the bottom of the Big East pecking order for a long time, but Holtmann is leading the effort to change DePaul’s perception within the conference. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking of turning a program around, Ed Cooley had a one-year head start on Holtmann after arriving at Georgetown prior to last season. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Hoyas opened the year with a 12-2 record but a weak non-conference schedule may be catching up to Georgetown in Big East play. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Per KenPom, Georgetown played a bottom-5 non-conference schedule with six opponents rated outside the top-250. The Hoyas have suffered three-straight losses to Marquette, UConn and Saint John’s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Laying a number like this in conference play is not something that Georgetown is used to doing. The Hoyas were an underdog in every conference game last season, with the exception of playing DePaul. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Hoyas closed as a seven-point home favorite over the Blue Demons in Washington last season and won by three. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Per KenPom, DePaul was rated as the No. 243 team in the country when these teams met in DC last season. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
DePaul has improved roughly 125 spots from last year to this year, yet Georgetown is laying a bigger number in Friday’s meeting than the Hoyas were laying in last year’s matchup. That doesn’t pass the sniff test. We’ll take the points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
