The big story in this one is the absence of Auburn’s national Player of the Year front-runner, Johni Broome. The 6-foot-10 senior suffered a nasty ankle injury in the second half of the Tigers’ 66-63 road win at South Carolina on Saturday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Broome was carried off the court and was unable to put any pressure on that leg, but initial tests came back with some positive news and there is optimism that Broome will not miss TOO much time over the next few weeks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So how do you fill the production of someone that was averaging 17.9 points and 10.7 rebounds per game? If there is any team in the country that is equipped to do it, it’s Auburn. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Tigers’ rank top-70 in all three of KenPom’s intangible metrics: Bench usage, experience and minutes continuity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prior to Broome’s injury, Auburn’s starting lineup consisted of five seniors that have played a lot of basketball together. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Talented freshman Tahaad Pettiford would probably start at 98-percent of teams across the country, but he comes off the bench to score 11.3 points per game for the Tigers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We took a look at three advanced analytic sites to see what their projection would be on this game with a fully-healthy Broome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

KenPom makes Auburn a 13-point favorite. Bart Torvik has Auburn -14.3 and Eric Haslam has Auburn -14.4. As of Tuesday morning, Auburn is a consensus -7.5 home favorite in this matchup against Mississippi State. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So on the No. 1 team in the country with four senior starters and one of the country’s best freshmen, the betting market is essentially saying that Broome is worth 6-7 points to the spread. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We’re not buying that. Mississippi State is a very good team, but this number has adjusted too far in favor of the Bulldogs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
