Dwight Howard has won the award three times and he’s the only player to win the award in three consecutive seasons. Sideny Moncrief, Mark Eaton, Dennis Rodman, Hakeem Olajuwon, Alonzon Mourning and Kawhi Leonard have each won the award twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2024-25 NBA Defensive Player of the Year Predictions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There was a debate last season that Victor Wembanyama should have won the award over Rudy Gobert as his defensive impact as an individual seem to outpace Gobert’s. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ultimately, Minnesota contending for the #1 seed in the West and owning the NBAs best defensive rating pushed Gobert over Wemby as San Antonio only won 22 games. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wembanyama recorded at least seven blocks in a league high eight games (one of which was a league high 10 blocks) and the next best player was Chet Holmgren with three 7+ block games. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 7’4″ Frenchman has a 10′ standing reach and he averaged 3.6 blocks and 1.2 steals per game last season. Wembanyama is a consensus shoo-in for the DPOY award this season but there isn’t much value in a -170-season long player prop. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I strongly considered Anthony Davis and Jaren Jackson Jr, but their injury histories make them a risky bet. Bam Adebayo doesn’t put up the numbers of a Wembanyama but his ability to guard both frontcourt and backcourt players are why he’s finished inside the top five for DPOY in each of the last five seasons. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last season, he made the All-Defensive First Team for the first time in his career, and it was long overdue. The market seems to be warming up to Adebayo as he has the same odds as Gobert. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adebayo is the anchor of a Miami Heat defense that ranked #5 in the NBA last season, and they lost a key play in Caleb Martin in the offseason. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adebayo is extremely durable as he’s 13 games or fewer in all but one season so if Wembanyama misses time, Adebayo could be next man up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
