I used the term “sandwich game” in this betting preview as an example of a situation for the Cincinnati Bearcats last weekend. A “situational variable” is not a measure I use in my handicapping process. For those that do issue a weight to teams in unusual situations, coming out of one or potentially looking ahead, the Oklahoma Sooners are unique to such this weekend.

The Sooners 21-point comeback on the Cotton Bowl stage versus the Texas Longhorns in the tradition-rich Red River Rivalry is as big as it gets for a game that is not part of the college football playoffs. All things equal the game last weekend between the two Big 12 rivals was essentially a piece of the January Four postseason bracket. A loss by the Sooners would likely have eliminated a Big 12 team, in this case, the Sooners, from consideration by the selection committee in early December. The Sooners weren’t supposed to win on Saturday. They trailed the Longhorns by 21-points in the second half and Texas took advantage of OU’s mistakes by turning them into touchdowns.

The Horned Frogs earned a big road win in Lubbock last Saturday and the reward of the victory is a second straight night event played in enemy territory. You know there are a dozen or three that have pinched themselves after the Cotton Bowl miracle against the Longhorns.

The Sooners are 6-0 on the season with a 2-4 against the number mark. Had the Sooners gotten the expected field goal to earn the win in Dallas metro area this past weekend they would be 1-5 with their handicap.

I spoke and wrote about the Horned Frogs this summer. The returning production from the returning starters and backups combined with big-game players in the transfer portal screamed big season for Gary Patterson and his players.

Injuries have nearly crippled the Horned Frogs on both sides of the ball. In the victory in Lubbock over the Red Raiders Saturday night the Frogs took more hits to their health.

I am issuing a strong suggestion that those who are considering supporting TCU and the two touchdowns they are receiving check the Thursday and Friday injury report at one of the college football media portals that offer in-depth coverage of the Big 12 programs, games, players, and more.

Patterson’s offense is working behind a make-shift offensive line due to injuries. The TCU victory vs Texas Tech was hard-earned. I won’t write this twice because it is unlikely I had to do it once but there is a large divide, a cavernous divide between the talent that makes up the Texas Tech team and that of what Oklahoma holsters.

Coach Gary Patterson announced a few notable injury concerns going into the OU game. https://t.co/KwcITMOLnt

— Fort Worth Star-Telegram (@startelegram) October 12, 2021

Oklahoma vs TCU Analysis from The GoldSheet

Despite flirting with disaster against Tulane, Nebraska, West Virginia and Texas, Oklahoma is unbeaten and in position to finish in the top-four nationally. TCU has dropped six-straight games against OU, last winning in 2014. Last season’s game came just after the Texas game for the Sooners, although they did have a bye week in between. They won 33-14 and are 10-1 following the last 11 Red River Showdowns. The Horned Frogs crushed Texas Tech 52-31 in Lubbock last Saturday, rushing for 394 yards as backs Kendre Miller and Zach Evans topped the 100-yards mark and QB Max Duggan got loose when he needed to. The Horned Frogs’ run defense was gashed by the Red Raiders and doesn’t figure to hold up well against Kennedy Brooks. The books have set this total at 63.5 and although the last two meetings have failed to produce that many points, it wouldn’t be stunning to see this game wind up similar to the 52-46 game the Sooners captured in Fort Worth in ’16.
