UMass College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Massachusetts (UMass) is 24-112 the past twelve seasons, and 6-48 lately, with few meaningful wins.\u00a0 This seems like fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2024 UMass NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Last year in this spot I started by listing \u201ceverything related to offense\u201d.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their 12.3 point offense improved to 23.2, the 3.4 run attack (uncorrected for sacks and kneel downs, as I do NOT chart this area for teams without individual sheets) improved to 4.4 per carry, and QB accuracy entered the modern era, (61%) after years hovering around 50%.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their QB returns, and more improvement is quite possible.\u00a0 The top two RB\u2019s transferred, so regression may happen.\u00a0 There is a new offensive coordinator, but he\u2019s had some success in the past.\u00a0 Defensively, UMass allowed 38 points per game and 5.7 per carry.\u00a0 The run defense was last under 5.0 (4.9) in \u201917, and the six-year average is 6.0.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I expect another year of challenging issues vs. the run.\u00a0 Despite a nickname of \u201cDr. Blitz\u201d, Don Brown\u2019s teams have just 37 sacks the past two seasons, and the school as a whole has 79 sacks over a six-year period.\u00a0 They play decent pass defense, but part of that is because teams can easily run on the Minutemen.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, the secondary has some talent and experience.\u00a0 Last year\u2019s PK was just 11-20.\u00a0 There\u2019s competition to replace him, but all choices are untested.\u00a0 I\u2019ll chart this area as well.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n


UMass Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

4-8 as a ceiling.\u00a0 I \u201cthink\u201d we\u2019ll see a bit more offensive improvement, but the run defense is bottom tier, and the kicking game, in case games are close, is completely unproven.\u00a0 UMass was in the MAC from 2012-2015, and will re-enter the MAC next year.\u00a0 Will Don Brown be the coach when that happens?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
