Houston College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dana Holgorsen ended his career at Houston 31-28, including a 4-8 record last season.  Willie Fritz could bring much needed stability to the program.  Let\u2019s see how fast he can right the ship.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

2024 Houston NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

QB Donovan Smith returns, but despite decent #\u2019s, the Cougars were held to just under 21 points per game in Big 12 play.  The RB room has depth, but the OL has issues.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have them running just 3.9 per carry.  Fritz brought two defensive starters with him from Tulane, and three additional transfers are slated to start on this side of the ball.  Players returning had just four of their 26 sacks from a year ago, so this is a critical area to chart.  DE Cooper had five sacks a year ago at Tulane.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their senior PK was just 3-9 from 40+ yards.  That is a concern.  Houston also loses a strong kick returner.

There\u2019s a chance QB Donovan is good enough to win a couple of games on his own, but the OL is a worry.  The staff is an upgrade, and I like what Fritz said on media day (yes, I tape and watch all coach interviews).  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This looks 3-9, but unlike other teams with roster holes, this team has a staff capable of correcting things.  I won\u2019t be surprised if they pull off an upset or two, but I don\u2019t expect Houston to get to a bowl game in \u201924.  <\/strong>
