Duke College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Duke\u2019s hire of Mike Elko was outstanding, but he\u2019s off to Texas A&M.  Wanting to remain relevant, the Blue Devils hired Manny Diaz, fresh off a successful stint at Penn State (defensive coordinator).  Can they keep the momentum going?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

2024 Duke NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

QB play will be a critical watch this season as highly touted former Texas backup Maalik Murphy is slated to start.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The run game last year was even better than expected at 5.1 per carry, but despite the slightly easier schedule (Notre Dame is off the docket), I think while still being solid, will come in at 4.55 per carry.  I say this because I\u2019m concerned about the OL, which lost two rare draft picks (for Duke), including 1st round pick Barton.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s two solid RB\u2019s and a WR with NFL talent which keeps them above average.  Manny Diaz knows defense (excellent as Penn St\u2019s DC), but so did Mike Elko.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The DL comes in lighter this season, and I have the run D regressing a bit.  I\u2019ll watch this early on to see if I\u2019m wrong, but note that their 1st six games represent the softest part of the schedule so be careful in your evaluations.<\/strong>  The secondary looks improved.  Kicking is more than solid (9-11 from 40+ yards).

Duke Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Last year I said that going 7-5 would be an outstanding achievement.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Duke went 7-5, and won their bowl game.  A 4-2 start is doable, and could get them to 6-6 and another bowl game.  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anything less than a 4-2 start could be problematic.  I went UNDER 6 wins, but there is a path to at least 6-6 if the key offensive players stay healthy, plus they get milage out of raw QB Murphy, and the new PK delivers. Let\u2019s see how the coaching transition goes.
