Mississippi State College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I don\u2019t understand it!  Zach Arnett was in a tough spot, replacing Mike Leach.  The AD fired him after just ten games!  Maybe Jeff Lebby is an upgrade (true), but that\u2019s the wrong thing to do.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The SEC can be brutal at times.

2024 Mississippi State NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The offense is changing once again.  Lebby is in charge, and he has former Baylor QB Blake Shapen (good stat sheet) to lead the way.  The RB room is unproven but under Lebby\u2019s creativity (Arnett was a good defensive coach), the #\u2019s should be decent.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One big problem: The OL must be completely rebuilt.  Three transfers (North Texas, LSU, Memphis) are slated to start, but they have only modest past experience.  Defensively, only one of their top seven tacklers will return, and their top two sackers are gone.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, these two players accounted for 267 tackles.  I see the run D (4.1 a year ago) in grave danger, and the rest of the defense will regress as well, although the 68% pass defense should improve a bit.  Kicking was decent (16-22, 9-10 inside 40).

Mississippi State Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A ceiling of 4-8, with 3-9 more likely (I went UNDER 4.5 wins<\/em>).  SADLY, my scheduling grid says 5-7 is possible.  The culprit?  The soft non-conference schedule, typical for the SEC.  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m sticking with the under play.  There\u2019s a chance Jeff Lebby becomes a solid Head Coach, but the current roster is not of bowl caliber, and the defensive staff could be overmatched year #1.  Usually, teams replacing an entire OL suffer growing pains.  Let\u2019s see if that\u2019s true.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
