SMU football Preview 2023: <\/strong> SMU Picks for Betting<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The coaching transition last year wasn\u2019t bad.  I expected and received 7-5.  SMU has room for more, but some key players are gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SMU Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Offensively, the running offense was decent, but did drop in 2022.  This area could improve, but the pass game took two critical hits.  Preston Stone has upside at QB but I suspect they\u2019ll be a drop in TD production as well as accuracy.  Rashee Rice will be even tougher to replace at WR.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Defensively, the run defense was clearly weaker, and that shouldn\u2019t have happened, at least to that extent.  The top four tacklers are gone for this year.  Each unit on defense took some hits, so on paper, the defense looks the same.  As many as eight portal transfers may start on defense, which is interesting.  Let\u2019s see how this all comes together.  I\u2019ll chart to see if there\u2019s a year #2 bump with the same staff in place.  The kicking game is solid. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

SMU 2023 Predictions, SMU Schedule:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I expect a 3-2 start before their bye week, which will be an ideal time to check QB efficiency, the newcomers on defense, and the defensive staff adjustments made from last season.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Road games at East Carolina and Temple won\u2019t be easy, but anything less than a split would be a concern.  With a win at Rice, SMU could and should be on a three-game win streak heading to a potentially critical game at Memphis.  The last four games have been extremely close (2-2), with SMU barely surviving at home in 2022.  SMU closes hosting Navy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SMU Football Bottom Line: <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There are valid reasons to believe that the team is weaker at some critical spots, but I like the pacing of the schedule, and FAU, Tulane and UTSA are avoided.  6-2 in conference play HAS to be the floor.  Chart the defense closely, but 8-4 should clearly be in play.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

SMU Football HANDICAPPING TIP<\/strong>: <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I faded them all six plays in 2022 going 2-3 in the regular season plus a bowl win.  I should be more balanced this season.  I doubt I\u2019ll be involved before their bye week, but am excited with the bye week placement, which should enable me to determine if they are better or worse than projected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
