No one expected 11-3 in 2021.  I was hoping for 5-7, with a rare over season win play try (over 3).  In 2022, Blake Anderson\u2019s team came back down to earth at 6-6 (plus a bad bowl loss).  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

All losses were by double-digits.  Entering year number three, how far removed is this program from the top of the conference?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Utah State Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As I said in this space a year ago, the 2021 regular season stat sheet didn\u2019t resemble a conference title holder.  Last year\u2019s pass defense percentage was bowl worthy, but the sack ratio was mediocre at best, and the rush ratio remained subpar.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ten JUCO\u2019s are here, but only three are currently slated to start (all on defense).  Multiple changes must be examined, with only four starters returning on each side of the ball.  Anderson is taking over play calling duties.  His QB had just an 11-10 ratio.  The OL returns just one starter.  If there\u2019s any improvement, it may be minimal.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The best of the added JUCO\u2019s are slated to start in the secondary.  The front seven looks weaker which includes losing their top sacker.  Three players left the team in the Spring, one of which was their best LB.  The new coordinator is veteran Joe Cauthon, whose resume was once promising, but has tapered off of late.  He has an opportunity to make an impact in this league, but it may take time, given the personnel changes.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is one Mountain West team with an unproven PK.  The anticipated starter is highly touted, but I\u2019ll be charting his performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Utah State 2023 Predictions, Utah State Schedule:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The interesting non-conference games are home to James Madison and at UConn.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If I\u2019m realistic, a split would be just fine.  I\u2019d be surprised if Utah State beat Air Force a 3rd<\/sup> straight time, especially at their place.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That gives them a 2-3 ceiling in my eyes with home games up next vs. Colorado State and Fresno.  Simply put, I\u2019ll decide which team is better, Colorado State or Utah State in 2023 as compared to my projections.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It would be \u201ceasy\u201d to say San Jose State will hold serve hosting the Aggies, but history disagrees, plus SJ St is hardly a trustworthy team.  There are two very winnable November games.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Utah St hosts Nevada, and in the final game, travel to New Mexico Mex, where their Head Coach may be in lame duck status.  The Aggies have won six straight vs. New Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Utah State Football Bottom Line: <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

5-7.  I won\u2019t be too surprised if Anderson wills 6-6 out of this team, but that\u2019s going to depend on the JUCO\u2019s overachieving and their special team coordinator making a mediocre unit better.<\/strong>  Fixing their -7 turnover ratio would be an excellent 1st<\/sup> step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I might consider backing them as a rush pick (never in that role in 2022, tougher than normal early schedule).  I\u2019m not opposed to finding other places to back them if my keys are met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
