These Golden State acquaintances have previously met five times, and not surprisingly, USC has won them all. The most recent meeting came in 2021 with the Trojans winning 30-3 as 13.5-point favorites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That game easily stayed under the total of 61, but Lincoln Riley is bringing a much different offense to the table than the one Clay Helton was running two years ago. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The largest margin of victory in this series came back in 2009 as the Trojans won 56-3 when Pete Carroll was still at the helm in the LA Memorial Coliseum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After winning the Mountain West Championship in 2020, San Jose State looked like it might be heading toward another very strong season in 2022. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Spartans held their own at Jordan\u2013Hare Stadium in an eight-point loss at Auburn before winning their first two conference games by a combined score of 73-23. Then tragedy struck. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Freshman running back Camdan McWright was killed in an accident, and the wheels came off the season in a hurry. San Jose State failed to cover the point spread in each of its final seven games. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can Brent Brennan get things back on track this year? He should have the pieces on offense to do so. The Spartans have nine returning starters on offense, including QB Chevan Cordeiro. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The questions will come on the defensive side where the Spartans are light on returning production, particularly in the trenches. Going up against the returning Heisman Trophy winner in your opening game is a tough place to start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Caleb Williams threw for over 4,500 yards with 42 touchdowns compared to just five interceptions last season. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lincoln Riley has assembled a dream team on offense, but the Trojans will still have some questions to answer on defense. USC gave up 29.2 points and 424 yards per game last season. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other unknown is how much the Trojans benefitted from turnover luck. USC led the country in turnover margin (+22) by a fairly wide margin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How much of that was Williams doing a great job of avoiding mistakes? How much of that was the defense aggressively hunting turnovers? And how much of that was simply luck? We’ll find out shortly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
