Only Georgia held this team under 38 points until the Vols \u201conly\u201d scored 31 in a 17-point victory over Clemson, a more than solid defensive team. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Obviously, going quickly puts a burden on their defense<\/strong>, which was already underachieving. If the Vols want to be firmly in top ten conversations then this side of the ball needs to improve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The areas I will chart are defensive sacks and the new kicker. The offense tends to run itself and there\u2019s not much to check, as I believe the OL will perform similarly to last year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The leading returning sacker(s) had just three. To take the pressure off the secondary, Tennessee need to find upgrade their pass rush<\/strong>. The run defense was a stout 3.55-120+ last year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n I\u2019m only moving that number up slightly, but this area is a bit thin, so I\u2019ll check the numbers out in case there\u2019s even more slippage. The new kicker comes from Indiana (39-51, but just 14-20 last year, with some misses from close range).<\/p>\n\n\n\n After a 2-0 start Tennessee travels to Florida. This is hardly a certain victory, but it is a necessary one for this team to have top ten aspirations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n While hosting UTSA should result in a win, that team is loaded and will give me excellent data points as to Tennessee\u2019s defense vs. an AAC level team. Having a week off should help this team\u2019s focus before they host Texas A&M<\/strong>, a team certainly capable of a \u201cmild\u201d upset. <\/p>\n\n\n\n It should also help the pass defense as they try to show improvement over \u201922 numbers. While host Alabama is likely to extract revenge (straight-up) over this team, my task will be what happens AFTER that game. <\/p>\n\n\n\n They stay on the road to face Kentucky (44-6 last year, 45-42 at their place in \u201921), and if there\u2019s any hangover from the Alabama game that could be an issue. <\/p>\n\n\n\n 3-1 in November is possible<\/strong> if they take care of business at Missouri. 4-0 would require a win over visiting Georgia<\/strong>. I need to determine if there\u2019s any Georgia lookahead before that Missouri game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 11-2 was outstanding last year, and achieved despite a suspect secondary. Another double-digit win record is not only possible, but expected<\/strong>? <\/p>\n\n\n\n Team talent is likely close to last year\u2019s unit, but I have concerns about the \u201ctrap\u201d games. Can the pass rush deliver more than what might be expected? Can the kicking game succeed? <\/p>\n\n\n\n I have a feeling Tennessee will look awfully good at times, but might also slip once or twice when not expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I\u2019m just 7-10 ATS of late with this team. I\u2019m concerned 9\/23 vs. UTSA<\/strong>, 10\/28 at Kentucky after facing Alabama, and 11\/11 at Missouri the week before they face Georgia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n I think they\u2019ll be competitive vs. Georgia<\/strong>, and if the other check points pan out, I will back them at other times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Football GoldSheet newsletter<\/a> is now available for purchase at WagerTalk!
