Sportsbooks Online

The History of the Las Vegas Raiders

The Las Vegas Raiders are one of the most storied and successful franchises in the National Football League (NFL), but they have also had a turbulent and controversial history that involves multiple relocations, lawsuits, and controversies. From their origins as an American Football League (AFL) team in Oakland to their current home in Las Vegas, the Raiders have won three Super Bowls, four conference championships, and 15 division titles. They have also produced some of the most legendary players, coaches, and personalities in NFL history. Here is a brief overview of the history of the Las Vegas Raiders.

The Oakland Raiders: 1960-1981

The Raiders began as one of the eight charter members of the American Football League (AFL) in 1960. It was in 1964 when the team first played in Las Vegas. On August 24, 1964 the team played the Houston Oilers in the first ever professional football game ever played in Las Vegas. The game was a preseason game at the original Cashman Field and was organized by Raiders general manager Al Davis and Wilbur Clark of the Desert Inn as a charity game to benefit ‘Wilbur Clark’s Cavalcade of Charities.’ The game would be the beginning of a long relationship between the Davis family and Las Vegas. The Raiders won the game 53 to 49.

The team became a part of the National Football League in 1970 as part of the AFL–NFL merger and have remained a member of the NFL ever since. They were part of the AFL’s Western Division for their first ten years and became part of the American Football Conference upon their joining the NFL.

During the team’s first stint in Oakland, they won Super Bowl XI and Super Bowl XV, as well as one AFL championship and three AFC championships. They also developed a fierce rivalry with other AFL teams, especially the Kansas City Chiefs and the Denver Broncos.

The Raiders were known for their aggressive and physical style of play, as well as their rebellious and renegade image. They had a loyal and passionate fan base, known as the Raider Nation, who wore black and silver and cheered for their team with chants of “Just win, baby” and “Commitment to excellence.”

Some of the most notable players who played for the Raiders during this era include quarterback Ken Stabler, wide receiver Fred Biletnikoff, tight end Dave Casper, running back Marcus Allen, defensive end Ben Davidson, linebacker Ted Hendricks, cornerback Willie Brown, safety Jack Tatum, and kicker George Blanda. The team was coached by John Madden from 1969 to 1978, who led them to seven division titles and one Super Bowl title. He was succeeded by Tom Flores, who coached them to two more Super Bowl titles.

The Los Angeles Raiders: 1982-1994

In 1980 Al Davis attempted unsuccessfully to have improvements made to the Oakland–Alameda County Coliseum, specifically the addition of luxury boxes. That year, he signed a memorandum of agreement to move the Raiders from Oakland to Los Angeles. The move, which required three-fourths approval by league owners, was defeated 22–0 (with five owners abstaining). When Davis tried to move the team anyway, he was blocked by an injunction. In response, the Raiders not only became an active partner in an antitrust lawsuit filed by

the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum (who had recently lost the Los Angeles Rams to Anaheim ), but filed an antitrust lawsuit of their own.

After the first case was declared a mistrial, in May 1982, a second jury found in favor of Davis and the Los Angeles Coliseum, clearing the way for the move. With the ruling, the Raiders relocated to Los Angeles for the 1982 season to play their home games at Memorial Coliseum.

The Raiders continued their success in Los Angeles, winning Super Bowl XVIII in 1983 with a dominant 38-9 victory over Washington Redskins. They also won four division titles and made seven playoff appearances during their time in Los Angeles.

Some of the most notable players who played for the Raiders during this era include running back Bo Jackson, wide receiver Tim Brown, defensive end Howie Long, linebacker Matt Millen, cornerback Lester Hayes, safety Ronnie Lott, and quarterback Jim Plunkett. The team was coached by Flores until 1987, who was replaced by Mike Shanahan, who lasted only 20 games before being fired by Davis. He was succeeded by Art Shell, who became the first African-American head coach in NFL history. Shell coached the Raiders until 1994, leading them to three playoff berths.

However, the Raiders also faced some challenges and controversies during their time in Los Angeles. The team had a strained relationship with the city and the Coliseum, which was aging and lacked modern amenities. The team also had a reputation for attracting a violent and unruly fan base, which led to security issues and lawsuits. Moreover, the team had some internal conflicts and disputes, such as the feud between Davis and Shanahan, the holdout of Allen, and the drug problems of Jackson.

The Return to Oakland: 1995-2019

In 1995, after failing to secure a new stadium deal in Los Angeles, Davis agreed to move the Raiders back to Oakland, where they received a renovated Coliseum and a lucrative lease agreement. The Raiders were welcomed back by their loyal fans in Oakland, who had remained faithful to the team despite their absence.

The Raiders had some success in their second stint in Oakland, winning three division titles and making five playoff appearances from 1995 to 2019. They also reached the AFC championship game in 2000 and 2002, but lost both times. In 2000, they lost to the Baltimore Ravens, who went on to win Super Bowl XXXV. In 2002, they lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who were coached by Jon Gruden, who had left the Raiders after the previous season in a controversial trade.

Some of the most notable players who played for the Raiders during this era include quarterback Rich Gannon, wide receiver Jerry Rice, running back Charlie Garner, tight end Zach Miller, defensive tackle Warren Sapp, linebacker Khalil Mack, defensive end Bruce Irvin, cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, safety Charles Woodson, and kicker Sebastian Janikowski. The team was coached by Gruden from 1998 to 2001, who led them to two division titles and one AFC championship game appearance. He was followed by Bill Callahan,

Norv Turner, Art Shell (in his second stint), Lane Kiffin, Tom Cable, Hue Jackson, Dennis Allen, Tony Sparano (interim), Jack Del Rio, and Jon Gruden (in his second stint).

However, the Raiders also faced some challenges and difficulties during their time in Oakland. The team had a long period of futility and mediocrity from 2003 to 2015, when they failed to post a winning record or make the playoffs for 13 consecutive seasons. They also had some controversial and questionable decisions and moves, such as trading away draft picks for aging or underperforming players (such as Randy Moss and Carson Palmer), hiring and firing coaches frequently (such as Kiffin and Jackson), drafting busts or disappointments (such as JaMarcus Russell and Darrius Heyward-Bey), and losing some of their best players to free agency or trades (such as Mack and Amari Cooper).

In addition, the Raiders had a strained relationship with the city and the Coliseum, which was still outdated and inadequate for an NFL team. The team also had a dispute with the league over revenue sharing and relocation fees. Moreover, the team had to deal with the death of Davis in 2011, who had been the owner and de facto general manager of the team since 1972. He was succeeded by his son Mark Davis, who inherited his father’s passion and loyalty for the Raiders.

The Las Vegas Raiders: 2020-Present

The Raiders played their first season in Las Vegas in 2020, marking a new era for the franchise and the city. The team played their home games at Allegiant Stadium, a state-of-the-art facility located near the Las Vegas Strip. The stadium features a retractable roof, a natural grass field, and a large torch in honor of Al Davis. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the stadium was closed to fans for the entire season.

The Raiders had a promising start in their first season in Las Vegas, going 6-3 in their first nine games, including an upset win over Kansas City Chiefs, the defending Super Bowl champions. They also had some thrilling moments, such as a last-second touchdown pass from Derek Carr to Henry Ruggs III to beat New York Jets in Week 13, and a game-winning field goal by Daniel Carlson to beat Cleveland Browns in Week 8.

Some of the most notable players who played for the Raiders during this season include quarterback Derek Carr, who had his best statistical season with 4,103 passing yards and 27 touchdowns; tight end Darren Waller, who set a franchise record for receptions by a tight end with 107 and made his first Pro Bowl; running back Josh Jacobs, who rushed for 1,065 yards and 12 touchdowns and made his first Pro Bowl; wide receiver Nelson Agholor, who had a career-high 896 receiving yards and eight touchdowns; defensive end Maxx Crosby, who led the team with seven sacks; and kicker Daniel Carlson, who set a franchise record for points scored by a kicker with 144.

The team was coached by Jon Gruden in his third season since his return to the Raiders (ninth overall). He was assisted by offensive coordinator Greg Olson, defensive coordinator Paul Guenther (who was fired after Week 14 and replaced by Rod Marinelli), and special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia.

However, the Raiders also faced some challenges and disappointments during their first season in Las Vegas. The team had a late-season collapse for the third consecutive year, losing five of their last seven games and finishing with an 8-8 record. They also lost some close games, such as a heartbreaking loss to Miami Dolphins in Week 16, when they allowed a miraculous pass from Ryan Fitzpatrick to Mack Hollins and a game-winning field goal by Jason Sanders in the final seconds.

The team also had some issues with injuries, COVID-19 protocols, penalties, turnovers, and defense. The team placed several players on injured reserve or COVID-19 reserve list throughout the season, including Trent Brown, Tyrell Williams, Richie Incognito, Damon Arnette, Clelin Ferrell, Jonathan Abram, and Nicholas Morrow. The team also faced fines and suspensions for violating COVID-19 protocols, such as not wearing masks or attending unauthorized gatherings. The team also ranked among the worst in the league in penalties (third-most), turnovers (fifth-most), and defense (30th in points allowed and yards allowed).

The Raiders missed the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year and the 17th time in the last 18 seasons. They became only the fourth team in NFL history to miss the playoffs after starting 6-3 or better. They also became only the second team in NFL history to lose to a team with no wins after Week 10 or later (the Jets).

Despite their disappointing finish, the Raiders showed some signs of improvement and potential in their first season in Las Vegas. They improved their record by one win from the previous season and had their first non-losing season since 2016. They also had some impressive wins over playoff teams such as the Chiefs, Saints, and Browns.

WagerTalk Live Odds Screen

WagerTalk’s live odds screen features up-to-the-minute lines from a variety of offshore and domestic sports books.

The game was a preseason game at the original Cashman Field and was organized by Raiders general manager Al Davis and Wilbur Clark of the Desert Inn as a charity game to benefit 'Wilbur Clark's Cavalcade of Charities.' The game would be the beginning of a long relationship between the Davis family and Las Vegas. The Raiders won the game 53 to 49.

The team became a part of the National Football League in 1970 as part of the AFL–NFL merger and have remained a member of the NFL ever since. They were part of the AFL's Western Division for their first ten years and became part of the American Football Conference upon their joining the NFL.

During the team's first stint in Oakland, they won Super Bowl XI and Super Bowl XV, as well as one AFL championship and three AFC championships. They also developed a fierce rivalry with other AFL teams, especially the Kansas City Chiefs and the Denver Broncos.

The Raiders were known for their aggressive and physical style of play, as well as their rebellious and renegade image. They had a loyal and passionate fan base, known as the Raider Nation, who wore black and silver and cheered for their team with chants of "Just win, baby" and "Commitment to excellence."

He was succeeded by his son Mark Davis, who inherited his father's passion and loyalty for the Raiders.
