in the National Football League (NFL), but they have a rich and colorful history that spans almost three decades. From their humble beginnings as an expansion team to their recent resurgence as a playoff contender, the Jaguars have experienced many highs and lows, and have produced some of the most memorable players and moments in NFL history. Here is a brief overview of the history of the Jacksonville Jaguars.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Birth of a Franchise: 1991-1994&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Jacksonville Jaguars were to be the 30th franchise of the National Football League. Jacksonville&#8217;s incredible drive actually began on August 17, 1989, when Touchdown Jacksonville!, a partnership, was formed to lead the community effort to win an NFL franchise. Jacksonville businessman Tom Petway led the group, which also included future Florida Governor Jeb Bush and shoe magnate Wayne Weaver, founder of Nine West.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1991, the NFL announced plans to add two expansion teams in 1994 (later delayed until 1995), its first expansion since the 1976 addition of the Seattle Seahawks and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Touchdown Jacksonville! announced its bid for a team, and Jacksonville was ultimately chosen as one of five finalists, along with Charlotte, St. Louis, Baltimore, and Memphis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jacksonville was considered the least likely expansion candidate for several reasons. The Jacksonville metropolitan area and television market were smaller than those of nearly every team in the league.  Jacksonville was the 54th largest television market, and only Green Bay had a smaller TV market (Jacksonville has since moved up to 42nd, trailed by New Orleans, Buffalo and Green Bay.) Although Jacksonville was the 15th largest city in the nation at the time by city proper population (It has since grown to become the 12th-largest), it has always been a medium-sized market because, as a consolidated city-county with Duval County, the city bounds already encompass most of the metropolitan area. There were 635,000 people in Jacksonville proper according to the 1990 census, but only 900,000 people in the metropolitan area. Additionally, the Gator Bowl was outdated, and the ownership group struggled to negotiate a lease with the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Jacksonville had some advantages that helped its bid. It had a strong football tradition and fan base, thanks to its hosting of college football games such as the Florida-Georgia game and the Gator Bowl. It also had a committed local government that agreed to renovate the Gator Bowl and provide tax breaks for the team. Moreover, it had a passionate leader in Weaver, who impressed the NFL owners with his vision and enthusiasm for bringing professional football to Jacksonville.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On November 30, 1993, NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue announced that Jacksonville had been awarded an expansion franchise, along with Charlotte. The news stunned many observers who expected St. Louis or Baltimore to get a team instead. The Jacksonville Jaguars were officially born, and Weaver became their first owner.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Early Success: 1995-1999&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Jaguars&#8217; first college draft pick was future All-Pro tackle Tony Boselli, who would serve as the anchor of a productive offense that helped the Jaguars quickly become a winning franchise. The team also acquired quarterback Mark Brunell from the Green Bay Packers in a trade, and signed wide receiver Jimmy Smith as a free agent from the Dallas Cowboys. These three players would form the core of the Jaguars&#8217; offense for years to come.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After posting a 4\u201312 record in their inaugural season under head coach Tom Coughlin, who also served as general manager, the Jaguars went 9\u20137 and earned a spot in&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the AFC playoffs as a wild card team in their second season. The team then proceeded to win two postseason games on the road against Buffalo Bills and Denver Broncos before losing to New England Patriots in AFC championship game. The Jaguars became only second expansion team (after Carolina Panthers) to reach conference championship game in their second season of play.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After again qualifying for playoffs in 1997 with an 11\u20135 record but losing in wild card round to Denver Broncos again ,the Jaguars added running back Fred Taylor to their dynamic offense in 1998 draft . Taylor would become one of best running backs in league history ,rushing for over 11,000 yards and 66 touchdowns in his career. The Jaguars won their first division title in 1998 with a 11\u20135 record, but lost in divisional round of playoffs to New York Jets.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following year, the team&#8217;s 14\u20132 record was the best in the NFL, but Jacksonville was upset by their division rival Tennessee Titans in AFC championship game. The Titans were the only team to beat the Jaguars that season, doing so three times, including twice in Jacksonville. The Jaguars had a chance to tie the game in the final minutes, but Brunell&#8217;s pass was intercepted in the end zone by Steve McNair.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Decline and Rebuilding: 2000-2011&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The phenomenal start of the Jaguars franchise was slowed in 2000\u201303, during which the team won no more than seven games in any season. The team suffered from salary cap problems, injuries, and aging players. Coughlin was fired after the 2002 season, and Weaver hired Jack Del Rio as the new head coach.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2005 and 2007, the Jaguars returned to the postseason with 12\u20134 and 11\u20135 records respectively, but were eliminated by the Patriots on each occasion. The team also drafted quarterback David Garrard in 2002, who became the starter in 2007 after Brunell was traded to Washington Redskins in 2004. Garrard led the team to its first playoff win since 1999, beating Pittsburgh Steelers on road in wild card round of 2007 playoffs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beginning in 2008, the Jaguars&#8217; play fell off further, and in 2012 they registered an NFL-worst 2\u201314 record. Beginning in 2013, the Jaguars sacrificed one regular-season home game per season to \u201chost\u201d that contest in London in an effort to build up the team\u2019s international appeal. While the team gained a larger fan base abroad, Jacksonville\u2019s poor on-field play continued, with the Jaguars tallying a franchise-worst sixth straight season with double-digit losses in 2016.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2011, Weaver sold the team to Pakistani-born businessman Shahid Khan, who became the first minority owner of an NFL franchise. Khan vowed to keep the team in Jacksonville and invest in improving the stadium and the roster. He also hired Dave Caldwell as general manager and Gus Bradley as head coach.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Resurgence and Regression: 2012-Present&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Jaguars drafted quarterback Blake Bortles with third overall pick in 2014 draft ,hoping he would be their franchise quarterback for future . However ,Bortles struggled with inconsistency ,turnovers ,and injuries throughout his tenure with Jaguars . He did lead the team to its first division title since 1999 and its first AFC championship game appearance since then in 2017 season ,with help of a dominant defense led by cornerback Jalen Ramsey ,defensive end Calais Campbell ,and linebacker Telvin Smith . Bortles was released after 2018 season and replaced by Nick Foles ,who signed a four-year ,$88 million contract with Jaguars . However ,Foles suffered a broken collarbone in his first game with Jaguars and missed most of season . Here is a brief overview of the history of the Jacksonville Jaguars.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>The Birth of a Franchise: 1991-1994&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>The Jacksonville Jaguars were to be the 30th franchise of the National Football League. Jacksonville's incredible drive actually began on August 17, 1989, when Touchdown Jacksonville!, a partnership, was formed to lead the community effort to win an NFL franchise. Moreover, it had a passionate leader in Weaver, who impressed the NFL owners with his vision and enthusiasm for bringing professional football to Jacksonville.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>On November 30, 1993, NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue announced that Jacksonville had been awarded an expansion franchise, along with Charlotte. The news stunned many observers who expected St. Louis or Baltimore to get a team instead. The Jacksonville Jaguars were officially born, and Weaver became their first owner.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>The Early Success: 1995-1999&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>The Jaguars' first college draft pick was future All-Pro tackle Tony Boselli, who would serve as the anchor of a productive offense that helped the Jaguars quickly become a winning franchise. The team also acquired quarterback Mark Brunell from the Green Bay Packers in a trade, and signed wide receiver Jimmy Smith as a free agent from the Dallas Cowboys. The Titans were the only team to beat the Jaguars that season, doing so three times, including twice in Jacksonville.
