Who is Derma Sotogake?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Derma Sotogake is a three-year-old chestnut colt who was bred in Japan by Shadai Farm and purchased for 19.8 million yen (about $163,000) at the 2021 JRHA Yearling and Foal Sale1. He is owned by Hiroyuki Osanuma and trained by Hidetaka Otonashi. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He is sired by Mind Your Biscuits, a multiple Grade 1-winning US dirt sprinter, and out of Amour Poesie, a stakes-winning mare who also produced Grade 3 winner Million Disk1. Derma Sotogake means \u201cskin sprint\u201d in Japanese, which reflects his sire\u2019s name and his speed on the track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Derma Sotogake started his career on turf, but he did not show much promise in his first two races. He switched to dirt in his third start and showed improvement, finishing third. He then went on to win his next three races, including two stakes races in Japan. One of them was the Zen-Nippon Nisai Yushun, the second race in the Japanese Road to the 2023 Kentucky Derby series. He earned 10 points for that victory, which qualified him for the UAE Derby (G2) at Meydan on March 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The UAE Derby was Derma Sotogake\u2019s first international race and his first time racing over 1 3\/16 miles. He faced a strong field of 14 horses from seven countries, but he dominated them with a wire-to-wire performance that saw him win by 5 1\/2 lengths in a fast time of 1:55.811. He earned 100 points for that win, which secured him a spot in the Kentucky Derby starting gate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also became the first Japanese horse to win the UAE Derby and the second horse to win both the Zen-Nippon Nisai Yushun and the UAE Derby after Lani in 20161.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Derma Sotogake arrived at Churchill Downs on April 18 after traveling more than 6,000 miles from Japan. He has been working well on the track under the guidance of Kate Hunter, the Churchill Downs Japan Coordinator who helps the Japanese team with logistics, paperwork, and cultural adjustments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
