Teofimo Lopez vs Sandor Martin Analysis<\/h3>\n

Former unified lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez takes on former Mikey Garcia conqueror, Sandor Martin, at Madison Square Garden in New York. Martin is a late replacement opponent for the originally-scheduled Jose Pedraza.<\/p>\n

Lopez was forced to change his nickname from the \u2018Takeover\u2019 to the \u2018Takeback\u2019 late last year after he was upset by Australian warrior George Kambosos Jr. in an absolute barnburner of a fight that saw both men hit the canvas.<\/p>\n

Kambosos has since gone on to lose those titles to one of Lopez\u2019s main rivals, Devin Haney. Should Lopez navigate his way through a tricky test this weekend, his name will certainly be mentioned in the title picture once again.<\/p>\n

Martin brings a lot of the same slippery technical expertise that could cause Lopez the same issues in this fight, namely ring craft coupled with a solid defensive gameplan.<\/p>\n

Martin Has The Tools To Make This One Interesting<\/h3>\n

While Lopez is unquestionably one of the most explosive fighters on the planet right now with almost freakish athletic ability, fundamentally speaking, Martin may well be the more polished of the two fighters heading into this one and proved that in last year\u2019s win over Mikey Garcia.<\/p>\n

While lacking a ton of power, Martin has range and timing, and Lopez has shown vulnerabilities to straight shots to the body in the past, as he constantly looks to swivel up top with that makeshift Philly Shell.<\/p>\n

2023 Set To Be A Huge Year For Teofimo<\/h3>\n

After the highs of 2020 in which Teofimo Lopez upset the former pound-for-pound king Vasily Lomachenko, the world looked to be Lopez\u2019s oyster. However, while all the trash-talking was taking place between him and Devin Haney for a potential mega-fight down at 135, Lopez surprisingly lost those belts in his very first defense against tough Australian fighter \u2018Ferocious\u2019 George Kambosos.<\/p>\n

With hopefully his second win of the year coming up against Sandor Martin this weekend in what\u2019s been a rebuilding phase for the American fighter, Lopez is looking to target a Josh Taylor clash for early to mid-2023 that would be a huge fight in the junior welterweight division.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s definitely no shame in taking an outside play on Sandor Martin to win by decision this weekend.<\/p>\n

Lopez does make some very fundamental mistakes, both to the body and up top, that a savvy fighter like Martin can look to take advantage of.<\/p>\n

Lopez\u2019s tendency to use his shell guard up top but then to use a prevent defense along with it to catch incoming punches with his power hand often leaves him vulnerable to incoming shots around the side. As yet, he has yet to face a fighter with enough power to really expose that flaw in his game but unless that\u2019s addressed at the fundamental level, that\u2019s something that may well catch up to him later in his career as his reflexes start to decline.<\/p>\n

With Lopez often being lax defensively to the body also, an area that Martin is strong in with those lunging jabs of his downstairs, the +700 on offer for Sandor Martin to win this fight on points definitely looks semi-appealing in this one.<\/p>\n

However with that aside, Martin needs to rely on a decision in this one as he simply doesn\u2019t carry the power to trouble Lopez in this fight, and couple that with a hometown Lopez crowd here on Saturday and probably one of boxing’s most freakish athletes, Martin would have to be on point for the entire 12 rounds just to make it interesting.<\/p>\n

Lopez carries one-punch, fight-ending power and could potentially turn Martin’s lights out at any time here on Saturday, so Martin really has to run a concentration gauntlet in this one despite all his skills.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, this is definitely one of Lopez\u2019s trickier assignments and while he definitely possesses that devastating knockout power, Sandor Martin should have enough technical ability to see out the final bell here.<\/p>\n
