Uruguay vs Portugal Analysis<\/h3>\n

Aside from Messi’s heroics, Saturday’s Argentina vs Mexico game was atrocious to watch: Constant fouls, constant flopping and absolutely no flow to the game. There were 34 fouls in that match and five yellow cards. For comparison, there were 13 fouls in the Denmark vs France game.<\/p>\n

Everything that was saw in that Mexico vs Argentina match is probably going to be replicated in this one. These two teams know each other very well. They met in the knockout round of the last World Cup with Uruguay earning a 2-1 win.<\/p>\n

There’s plenty of cross-over between their domestic clubs. Uruguay defender Jose Maria Gimenez plays at Atletico Madrid with Portugal’s Joao Felix. Facundo Pellistri (Uruguay), Edinson Cavani (Uruguay), Bruno Fernandes (Portugal) and Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) were all at Manchester United together over the last year. There’s plenty of familiarity between players that compete in the Premier League and La Liga.<\/p>\n

Scoreless Streak Continues<\/h3>\n

Uruguay has held each of its last five World Cup group stage opponents scoreless. Eight of Uruguay’s last ten opponents have failed to score. South Korea did not have a single shot on goal against them in the opener.<\/p>\n

Old Guard vs New School<\/h3>\n

Much like his battle at Manchester United, Cristiano Ronaldo is stuck in a changing-of-the-guard situation on the national team. Ronaldo cashed a penalty kick opportunity in the opener against Ghana, putting him in rare company to score in five World Cups. Portugal’s other two goal scoreres, Joao Felix and Rafael Leao, are both 23 years old. Ronaldo is 37.<\/p>\n

Manager Fernando Santos has been with Portugal since 2014. Navigating the balance between skillful youth vs valuable experience will determine how far Portugal goes in this tournament.<\/p>\n

Portugal’s opener with Ghana was the first time that an opponent has scored multiple goals against the Portuguese in over 12 months. During the latest edition of the UEFA Nations League, Portugal out-scored Spain, Switzerland and Czech Republic 11-3 over six matches. Midfielder Danilo Pereira will miss the next two matches after suffering an injury.<\/p>\n

Uruguay vs Portugal Prediction<\/h2>\n

It’s going to be an ugly match. Stakes are high because the winner of Group H will avoid Brazil in the Round of 16, assuming the Brazilians win their group. Based on the tournament history of these two teams, the scoreboard operator is unlikely to be very busy.<\/p>\n
