Tottenham vs Marseille Analysis<\/h3>\n

The Champions League group stage kicks off this week and group favorites Tottenham host French outfit Marseille to open things up on Wednesday. It’s hard to believe, but this is the first-ever meeting between the sides and both come into the match in great form as both are unbeaten on the season.<\/p>\n

Getting Lucky in Defense?<\/h3>\n

Antonio Conte has his side off to a great start in the EPL sitting third in the table with a 4-2-0 record and 12:5 goal differential. The xG table has Tottenham ranked a little more modestly at No. 5 with a +0.82 xG differential per game.<\/p>\n

Defense seems to be the point of worry though as they are allowing 14.3 shots per game which ranks No. 12 in the league and a far cry from the elite EPL sides like Man City allowing just 5.7, Arsenal 7.8 and Liverpool 8.7 shots per game.<\/p>\n

Tottenham has won all three matches at home this season, though only one of those came by more than one goal, but their competition in London hasn\u2019t been the strongest as they have hosted Fulham, Wolves and Southampton on the season.<\/p>\n

In their toughest game of the season, Tottenham drew 2-2 at Chelsea but it took until the 90+6\u2019 minute for them to pull even and honestly, that result felt lucky as Chelsea was the better side with better chances in that match.<\/p>\n

Ligue 1 Leaders<\/h3>\n

Okay, technically PSG leads French Ligue 1 thanks to goal differential, but Marseille sits tied with PSG on 16 points through six matches this season and looks well on their way to locking up Champions League football once again for next year.<\/p>\n

Ligue 1 is certainly a weaker league than the EPL, but Marseille has been impressive with five wins and one draw including keeping three straight clean sheets. They have similar xG numbers as Spurs at +0.83 per game and their three goals allowed is the best in the league.<\/p>\n

Like Tottenham, Marseille has not faced the strongest competition so far this season with a 3-0 win at Nice their signature win thus far.<\/p>\n

Tottenham vs Marseille Prediction<\/h2>\n

Marseille has a great chance at progressing from this group, especially if they can come into London and grab a result on Match Day 1. Tottenham is the clear favorite to advance from the group and I think that will set Marseille up to play a slower paced, defensive style as they try to steal a point and look to play on the counter. The total is set at 2.75 goals and I would lean to the under, but in case of a 2-1 result, grabbing Marseille with the one-goal head start seems like the better option.<\/p>\n
