Portland Trailblazers vs Minnesota Timberwolves Analysis

The resurgent Minnesota Timberwolves head to the Moda Center in Portland for a Western Conference showdown with the Trailblazers. The Twolves improved to 23-23 after prevailing in a high scoring affair 136-125 at home on Sunday. Meanwhile the Trailblazers picked up a 114-105 road victory over the Toronto Raptors. The Minnesota Timberwolves won the first head-to-head meeting 116-111 in Portland on December 12th. The Blazers did have Dame Lillard but were without CJ Mccollum, while the Twolves were at full strength.

Young Wolves Make Strides

The Minnesota Timberwolves has picked up some momentum and confidence in their last few games and have won three of their last four games. The Wolves “Big 3” came up big indeed in their high scoring victory over the Brooklyn Nets. D’Angelo Russell had a double double with 23 points and 10 assists. Karl Anthony-Towns hammered down 23 points and 7 rebounds, while Anthony Edwards led the team with 25 points.

Karl Anthony-Towns said “It doesn’t have to be me every night, that’s why we have great talents like Anthony Edwards and D’Angelo Russell.” Patrick Beverley missed last game with ankle injury and remains questionable along with Anthony Edwards for this contest. The Twolves rank 9th in points scored with 111 per game and 21st in points allowed with 110 a game.

Blazers Upset Raptors on the Road

For the second game in a row the Portland Trailblazers recorded an unexpected win. The Blazers picked up back-to-back road victories over both the Boston Celtics and Toronto Raptors. They recorded a 114-105 victory after clamping down on defense and only allowing 34 first half points. It was the Blazers 4th victory in five games and they now sit at 20-26 on the season.

CJ Mccollum, Nassir Little and Anfernee Simons each scored 19 points to lead the team in the victory over Toronto. Damien Lillard remains out for this game after abdominal surgery, while Cody Zeller, Norman Powell and Larry Nance Jr are all questionable for this contest with various ailments. The Blazers are 15th in scoring with just over 108 points a game and 26th in scoring defense allowing 112 points a game to their rivals.

Portland Trailblazers vs Minnesota Timberwolves Prediction

The Minnesota Timberwolves come into this game as three point road favorites with a total of 233. Both teams come into this game in great form making it tough to pick a side with a minimal spread. The Twolves have a 26-20 over/under record, while the Blazers sit at .500. Minnesota is also 4th in pace while the Blazers rank 19th. The Timberwolves like to get up and down the floor and play high scoring games, while the Blazers have the shooting to score consistent points against the Minnesota defense. It’s a high total, but I could see both teams approaching 120 points and soaring over 233.

Portland Trailblazers vs Minnesota Timberwolves Preview from GoldSheet

Perhaps because recent T-wolves wins over high-profile sorts like the Warriors and Nets have been featured more prominently on ESPN and elsewhere, the oddsmakers have tilted this number in Minny’s direction. Or maybe because Damian Lillard remains sidelined after recent abdominal core surgery on the Blazers side, the sort of news flash that often gets more run on some of the sports networks than actual results.

If paying attention to the latter, however, Portland should perhaps be granted a bit wider berth tonight as it returns home from an extended and successful road trip that included four wins in the last five thru various ports of call in the Eastern Conference. Though Lillard remains out, CJ McCollum recently returned to active duty on the Blazers side after missing more than a month due to a punctured lung but definitely seems to have back his wind, on the floor for 38 minutes in Sunday’s upset win at Toronto and scoring 21 ppg in the four games since his return.

While the Wolves are winning lately, too, it seems like Sam Mitchell is just rolling the ball out on the court and letting his team shoot in recent games, reflected in a league-best 119.3 points per 100 possessions the past three weeks., with lots of very high scorelines (such as the 136-125 win over Brooklyn on Sunday) and not surprisingly “overs” in seven of eight.

But remember that despite recent successes, Minny has also lost outright in 7 of its last 11 away, maybe not the sort of recent track record you’d want with a road favorite. Note that Portland had Lillard available, but not McCollum, when it lost by 5 the last time Minny invaded Moda Center on Dec. 12.
