Azerbaijan Grand Prix Betting Analysis

Several significant changes this week in Formula 1 that we need to get to right away so we understand how the weekend will work. We will start with the Sprint Shootout.

Forget how they did it last year, it’s completely different. Think of Saturday as it’s own race and qualifying session.

They will qualify Saturday morning for the Sprint race, then run the Sprint race later that day and eight points will be given to the winner of the Sprint race, seven points for second place, all the way down to eighth place getting one point. That day is separate and won’t affect the race.

On Friday, they will run a practice session early, and then a qualifying session later that day. That will determine the starting lineup for Sundays race. They will race Sunday like normal. So Friday and Sunday are related, Saturday is on it’s own.

Qualifying Is Different

Q1 is now 12 minutes, Q2 is 10 minutes, and Q3 is 8 minutes. This means drivers can have two runs in Q1 with the opportunity to pit in between those runs, but there won’t be enough time to run twice and pit in Q2 and Q3.

So teams will need to get their fasted lap on the first lap or try and do it on tires with a lap or two on them. Mediums are the only tyres allowed for Q1 and Q2 and softs are the only ones allowed for Q3.

Baku City Circuit

It’s a little bit of a strange track with one really long stretch and a shorter one running parallel to it with a circle on the other end. It’s always looked like a baby’s rattle to me, but no matter what shape it is, it’s a Red Bull track.

Max won this race by 20 seconds over his teammate while third place was 25 seconds behind that. If Red Bull qualify clean, and get off to a good start on Sunday they can repeat that performance easily as the other cars won’t have any answer for the speed on the stretches.

We will see what issues Ferrari have this week as it always seems to be something with them, mostly self inflicted. They should be battling with Fernando Alonso for a podium finish, and we will see if Mercedes can sneak into the mix.

I would like to put the other Aston Martin car into this category, but like most, I can’t really take Lance Stroll serious until he shows some consistent greatness to compete with these other guys.

I hope to get some good matchups with the Alpine cars against others as they always seem to perform well on race day when they don’t wreck each other.

I’ll be keeping a close eye on Mclaren to see if their Double Top 10 finish in Australia was a sign of improvement or lucky results based on some big names going out of the race and fortunate positioning on restarts.

George Russell is in line for a big weekend I believe as he and his team have to be really bummed about the reliability issue that took him out of last race. He’ll have a fresh engine and a bit of extra motivation this week which leads me to my favorite prop this week.

Azerbaijan Grand Prix Predictions

Prediction: Mercedes Double Top 10

I use this prop to put with another parlay piece, either in Formula 1 or in another sport as it’s -225 right now.

You could play it now on its own if you’re comfortable laying juice or wait and see if something goes wrong for them in qualifying, but if they have a Good Friday, this price will drop come Sunday.
